Young people’s sport panel Recruitment campaign 2018

What is the #sportpanel?

This will be our 4th panel Led by sportscotland & supported by Young Scot Group of young people Aged 14 – 23 years from across Scotland Voice for young people in sport 2 year membership The Young people’s sport panel (YPSP) is a lottery funded programme, led by sportscotland and supported by Young Scot. The sport panel provides a national platform for young people to have a voice in sport at a national level, ensuring their opinions and views are heard, valued and they have the opportunity to influence decision making and drive change. The YPSP was first established in 2012. sportscotland is the national agency for sport. It is a non-departmental public body, responsible through ministers to the Scottish Parliament. It is a National Lottery Fund distributor and is governed by National Lottery distribution rules. sportscotland invest Scottish Government and National Lottery resources to build a world-class sporting system for everyone in Scotland. Young Scot is the national youth information and citizenship agency for Scotland, and currently has a membership of over 650,000 young people across Scotland. Young Scot provides all young people in Scotland aged 11-26 with information, ideas and incentives to enable them to make informed decisions and choices, turn their ideas into action and take advantage of opportunities available throughout Scotland and Europe.

What are their aims?

To raise the profile of sport To influence and shape the future of sport in Scotland The Young people’s sport panel provides a national platform to represent the voice of young people across Scotland and by working together and on their own panel members work towards raising the profile of sport and to help influence and shape the future of sport in Scotland. Together the panel bring different experiences, different roles and a broad range of ideas, to create a stronger panel. The panel is currently in its third two-year cycle and has made great strides in ensuring the voice of young people is part of the sporting conversation across Scotland and they are making a significant contribution to sport through activities lined to the key aims. “Being part of the YPSP is an incredible opportunity, to be able to work with other young people and really be part of influencing change for young people in sport in Scotland. Its so inspiring to know you are making a positive difference for others.” Kirsty   “The YPSP is inclusive, rewarding, so much fun and very important for the encouragement and development of young people.” Rhys

What work do they do?

Represent YPSP at events and play an active role Work on national projects to help improve and drive change in sport in Scotland Contribute views and ideas to consultations and discussion groups to influence and shape decision making (‘having your say’) on Scottish sport Represent YPSP at events and play an active role Develop information to raise the profile of sport Use social media to engage other young people in sport Co-host #SportHour Being part of the sport panel is a great opportunity for a young person; over the years the experience has made a positive difference to the lives of past and present panel members and they have made an important contribution to Scottish sport. Since the panel was formed in 2012 members have contributed to help influence and shape sport in Scotland and raise the profile of sport. They’ve had the chance to input on national policy by attending sportscotland board meetings and the current panel were introduced to Public Health and Sport Minister, Aileen Campbell, at the Scottish Parliament in June 2016, at the start of their sport panel journey. They had the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session with Ms Campbell, discussing how to raise the profile of sport among young people across the country. Previous panel members have been involved in shaping the Scottish Government’s Youth Sport Strategy, ‘Giving Children and Young People a Sporting Chance’, which was published in 2014. The sport panel have been involved in a range of activities, 2017 saw the panel work on key project areas; women and girls sport and disability sport, community sport hubs and active schools. They also consulted on the new safeguarding standards for children and young people in sport with Children 1st and meeting with Year of Young People 2018 ambassadors. The sport panel with sportscotland and Young Scot staff developed a Co-Design Plan to provide a focus and direction for their work over the two year period (June 2016-2018). As part of their development plan the YPSP have set up two working groups: women and girls and disability as areas of work they have identified they want to make an impact as part of the equalities and inclusion agenda. In 2017 the sport panel established a link with Scottish Disability Sport’s Young People’s Sport Panel, with a joint aim to raise the profile of disability sport. The sport panel have been proactive in running campaigns to raise awareness of women and girls sport such as #unstoppablegirl. The sport panel were also part of Scotland’s homecoming event to mark the success of the Scots on Team GB and ParalympicsGB at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016. The panel assisted the athletes as they took part in sporting events with school children from across the country at Oriam, Scotland's Sports Performance Centre. With 2018 designated ‘The Year of Young People’, the sport panel are more determined than ever to ensure that young people across Scotland get the chance to have their voices heard at a local and national level. Regarded as the ‘blueprint’ for young people’s panels, the sport panel will produce a toolkit this year sharing their advice and tips on creating a similar group. The panel have also been responsible for the production of regular content to help raise the profile of sport. They produce blogs, multi-media clips, conducted interviews, researched key topics and promoted through social media all with the hope of inspiring more young people to get involved in sport. For the past two years the sport panel have helped co-host #SportHour. The panel devised a women in sport campaign which was designed to motivate their peers. Overall the campaign had a potential reach of 120,000 people on twitter, Eilidh Child liked and retweeted an inspirational quote reaching 63,500 people alone. The sport panel have played a key role in the development of young decision makers, developing an online toolkit for use by young leaders in clubs to help ensure the views and opinions of young people are at the heart of the decision making process and School Sport Awards helping to support the implementation nationally and in their local areas, working closely with Active schools and PE officers. A member of the panel sits on the School Sport Award review panel. Attend conferences/events/meetings where there are opportunities to share your ideas, contribute to discussions with key decision makers and get involved in public speaking. Panel members have been involved in delivering and developing the content for workshops.
