Essential Question E1.1 Why are space shuttles built with different materials than an airplane? Item 1 List science terms associated with question ( 2 min) Item 2 Share with Partner (2 min) Item 3 Discuss (6 min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1vmVJKqUFE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfY5ZQDzC5s

Vocab Page E1.1 Troposphere-  is the lowermost layer of the Earth's atmosphere. Most of the weather phenomena, systems, convection, turbulence and clouds occur in this layer. 99% of water vapor located here.

Vocab Page E1.1 Stratosphere- The layer located above the troposphere. Air temperature in the stratosphere slowly increases with altitude. Temperature increases with ozone concentration, because ozone layer is located at the top. Most jet planes fly here. Mesosphere- The third layer from the surface above the stratosphere. The temperatures again fall as low as -93°C as you increase in altitude. Ionosphere- Above the mesosphere is the ionosphere. It extends to about 430 miles (690 kilometers) and is so thin it's generally considered part of outer space. The International Space Station and many satellites orbit within the ionosphere. Thermosphere- The temperature begins to increase in altitude here.

Vocab Page E1.1 Exosphere- Last layer of the atmosphere. Extends outward until it interacts with the solar wind.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zOlkIyg3iE Nitrogen- A gas that is colorless and odorless. 78% of Earth’s atmosphere.  Its compounds are vital components of foods, fertilizers, and explosives. Oxygen- 21% of Earth’s atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide- Belongs in other gas category of 1% of Earth’s atmosphere. Other Gases- water vapor, CO2, other trace gasses Air Pressure or atmospheric Pressure- force exerted on you by the weight of tiny particles of air

Vocab Page E1.1 (END) Density- The relationship between the mass of the substance and how much space it takes up (volume). D = m/v. Mercury Barometer or Aneroid Barometer- A barometer is a widely used weather instrument that measures atmospheric pressure. Equilibrium- a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced. Altitude- The height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level.
