Reading and Annotating: First Glimpse “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe What do you initially notice about the text? Genre of Writing: Length: Author Information:

Reading and Annotating: Asking Questions Read the first stanza (lines 1-6). What questions do you start to develop from this stanza? Who is the speaker? How does the poem feel? Any rhyming? Any dialogue?

Reading and Annotating: Asking Questions Read the next four stanzas (lines 6-30). Do you notice any repetition or anything that could be connected with arrows? What tone does the author have?

Reading and Annotating: Marking for Understanding Read the next five stanzas (lines 31-60). Circle anything that confuses you and make a note to the side of your paper that explains why you are confused. Whole Class: What confused you?

Reading and Annotating: Discovering Pattern Read the next five stanzas (lines 61-90). Connect important words that are repeated with lines and arrows. Example: In the margins, describe why you think these words are repeated within these lines. Do you think they are repeated elsewhere?

Reading and Annotating: Finalizing Significance of Text Read the last four stanzas (lines 91-108). Circle the concepts/phrases you felt were most important in Poe’s final lines. Explain your thoughts in the margins. Summarize the entire text in one paragraph. Partners: Share your summary with a partner. Do they match up?

Reading and Annotating: Finalizing Significance of Text Did your partner’s summary match with your own summary? Why or why not?

Reading and Annotating: Finalizing Significance of Text How did annotation help you come to a consensus about the purpose and events of this text?
