Lord of the Flies Discussion Chapters 1-4

Get into your 4 person groups Just like your passage packets, we will be discussing the LotF. Take out your books and remove everything else from your desk. In your groups, discuss each annotation objective on the next slide. Focus on the symbolic meaning present in the book. See you if can find the exposition and the rising action. Share your interpretations.

Chapter One: The Sound of the Shell On pages 7 and 10, Golding provides a detailed description of the island. Highlight passages that include detail about color. In the margins, annotate the potential symbolic references and rhetorical power of these colors.   On pages 16-17, highlight details that describe the conch and how it’s used. Annotate details that convey the significance of this object.   On page 19, the choir is introduced. Highlight details that describe the choir boys and provide interpretations in the margins. The images of the choir entering symbolize what famous historical group? If you know, or can guess, compose the name of this group in the margin. On page 28, the boys encounter “the great rock.” In the margins, highlight details and images that describe the island both before their encounter with the rock and after offer your interpretations.

Chapter Two: Fire on the Mountain On pages 33-36, Golding clearly uses dialogue to develop the main characters. In the margins, analyze the dialogue of each of the main characters and compose descriptions of the main characters. Summarize and analyze what different boys think about the “beastie.” On page 38, the boys leave the meeting abruptly. Compose an analysis of what this means and what this likely foreshadows. On page 44, Golding’s description of the forest responding to the boys and the fire can be interpreted figuratively. Compose your analysis of the descriptions in the margins. On pages 44-46, annotate the significance of character dialogue and actions. At the end of the chapter, compose one sentence explaining what happens to the boy with the mulberry birthmark. What are the implications of this event?
