Lord of the Flies Discussion Chapters 1-4

Get into your 4 person groups Just like your passage packets, we will be discussing the LotF. Take out your books and remove everything else from your desk. In your groups, discuss each annotation objective on the next slide. Focus on the symbolic meaning present in the book. See you if can find the exposition and the rising action. Share your interpretations.

Chapter One: The Sound of the Shell On pages 7 and 10, Golding provides a detailed description of the island. Highlight passages that include detail about color. In the margins, annotate the potential symbolic references and rhetorical power of these colors.   On pages 16-17, highlight details that describe the conch and how it’s used. Annotate details that convey the significance of this object.   On page 19, the choir is introduced. Highlight details that describe the choir boys and provide interpretations in the margins. The images of the choir entering symbolize what famous historical group? If you know, or can guess, compose the name of this group in the margin. On page 28, the boys encounter “the great rock.” In the margins, highlight details and images that describe the island both before their encounter with the rock and after offer your interpretations.

Chapter Two: Fire on the Mountain On pages 33-36, Golding clearly uses dialogue to develop the main characters. In the margins, analyze the dialogue of each of the main characters and compose descriptions of the main characters. Summarize and analyze what different boys think about the “beastie.” On page 38, the boys leave the meeting abruptly. Compose an analysis of what this means and what this likely foreshadows. On page 44, Golding’s description of the forest responding to the boys and the fire can be interpreted figuratively. Compose your analysis of the descriptions in the margins. On pages 44-46, annotate the significance of character dialogue and actions. At the end of the chapter, compose one sentence explaining what happens to the boy with the mulberry birthmark. What are the implications of this event?

Symbolism Notes Revisited

SYMBOLISM

WHAT IS A SYMBOL? Raise your hand and give me an example of a symbol. What do they all have in common? How would you define what a symbol is?

SYMBOL DEFINITION: an object, person, situation, action, or some other element in the story that has a literal meaning but suggest or represents other meanings as well.

PAIR EXERCISE Get into your pairs and discuss the words or ideas associated with this symbol: Write “Connotation” on one side of a piece of paper. Write “Denotation” on another side of the paper. Write down words that correspond to

DO THE SAME FOR THIS:

“THE INTERLOPERS” DISCUSSION Take out a piece of paper and write a sentence explaining the role setting plays in the story. What is the setting a symbol for? Who are the interlopers? Use textual evidence. Do they symbolize anything? Why did the author choose to make these things the interlopers? What message is present in the story?

“THE INTERLOPERS” DISCUSSION The message can be: Don’t hang onto issues. Don’t let the past rule your future. Bury the hatchet. Don’t create more problems for yourself. Physical possessions are not worth your life.

Symbolism – The Cask of Amontillado By Edgar Allan Poe

“The Cask of Amontillado” Download the story from classroom. While you read the story, answer the questions and complete the annotations. All questions must be completed. Make sure you note: Symbolism – the sheild Plot – Separate the story like “The Interlopers”

Montresor Coat of Arms In the story, the character Montresor describes his family’s coat of arms. Given Montresor’s attitude and the theme of the story, what do these symbols represent: Golden Foot Snake Blue field in the background In your notes, write how this coat of arms tells the story of “The Cask of Amontillado”. You must write 6-8 sentences for your explanation.

This can be a sentence that describes you or your beliefs. On the back, List and label each of your symbols and their meaning. Make sure you write your name on the back.
