Definition of symbolism Symbolism – the use of symbols to represents ideas or qualities.
Three made up examples of symbolism
First example: In edgar allan poe's "the raven'', the black bird stands for death and loss
Second example: In william blakes "ah! sunflower'', the sunflower represents people and the sun represents life.
Third example: In samuel taylor coledridges "the rime of the ancient mariner'', the albatross can be seen as standing for a burden you must bear.
