Trip to the Moon Story

Shuttle and Rocket Information Total Weight = 4,400,000 lbs. Thrust needed for lift off = 7,000,000 lbs. Escape velocity = 25,000 mph G-forces = 3 g

G-forces A human centrifuge is used to train people to experience g force. The centrifuge spins around quickly causing a tremendous amount of weight and pressure on the person.

Blast Off and Into Space Blast off includes a tremendous amount of noise, shaking, and g force pressure on a person. As the space craft leaves earth the g forces reduce until a person is weightless.

Living in Space

Moon Information 240,000 miles away 3-4 day trip Gravity is 1/6 of earth’s gravity No atmosphere Rocks and dust from impact craters Some water discovered Weak moonquakes There are at least four different kinds of moonquakes: (1) deep moonquakes about 700 km below the surface, probably caused by tides; (2) vibrations from the impact of meteorites; (3) thermal quakes caused by the expansion of the frigid crust when first illuminated by the morning sun after two weeks of deep-freeze lunar night; and (4) shallow moonquakes only 20 or 30 kilometers below the surface.
