Presentation transcript:

Today is Tuesday, May 28th, 2013 Homework: Warm UP: Work on Rocket Design (you MUST show me your design by Friday) LAST HOMEWORK PACKET (Due Monday, June 3rd) Warm UP: Quietly take a seat and be prepared to model the Earth and the Moon. Get your notebooks READY to take notes (blue notes only)

Goal for Today SWBAT demonstrate an understanding of the Moon’s effect on Earth by discussing the relative positions of the Moon, Earth and Sun during each of the phases of the Moon and the resulting effects on Earth. Students will also be able to understand the effect the Moon has on Earth’s tides and characteristics of the Moon.

Only write down the BLUE text…. Date: Tuesday, May 28, 2013 Title: The Moon

The Moon The moon is a satellite, which is a rock or anything that orbits another object.

Moon is the only object in space that humans have visited. Negligible atmosphere (that means there is basically no atmosphere at all – when standing on the surface of the Moon an astronaut is exposed directly to the vacuum of space outside of his or her spacesuit)

Features of the moon Has craters (caused by rocks or comets), valleys, mountains, and flat, smooth plains “Moonquakes” sometimes occur Ancient lava flows created smooth areas We only see the “near side” of the moon, because the Moon rotates at the same rate it revolves around Earth  about 28 days. We don’t see the “dark side”.

How did the Moon get there? Several different theories, and no one knows for sure. We do know that the Moon is as old as Earth (4.5 billion years old based on rock dating).

The shapes of the lit side of the Moon we can see Moon phases The shapes of the lit side of the Moon we can see

Getting bigger in appearance = waxing Getting smaller in appearance = waning

Spring and Neap Tides occur on a 2 week cycle Affect of Moon on Tides The gravity of the Sun and Moon causes the rise and fall of tides everyday Spring Tide – when the sun and moon are lined up with Earth, their combined gravity causes very high tides Neap Tide – when the sun and moon are at right angles, the tidal bulges are lower Spring and Neap Tides occur on a 2 week cycle

Closing it up….. True or False: A Waxing Crescent Moon is a crescent moon that is getting SMALLER in appearance in the night sky. False, a waxing crescent moon is getting BIGGER What is the only celestial body (object in space) that humans have visited (other than Earth, duh!)? The Moon (Earth’s Moon; Luna = Scientific Name) You go to the beach and the tide comes in. The tide seems almost unusually high to you that day. What kind of tide are you most likely experiencing? Spring Tide
