Introduction Hello, I am Sherika, a Correction officer for Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, New York. This is a maximum security prison for men operated by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). The facility houses approximately 1,750 inmates. Sing Sing is the second oldest prison in New York State, and is located about 30 miles north of New York City on the bank of the Hudson River.

Facility Description Sing Sing correctional facility is a Maximum security facility located in Ossining in Westchester County. This Facility is used for the general confinement of males 18 years of age or older. Males16 years of age or older may be temporarily housed in the Residential Crisis Treatment Program. There is roughly 2,000 inmates and a staff of 1,000 employees, including correctional officers. Ratio inmate to correctional 4.9 to 1. Correctional officers are responsible for the custody, security, safety and well-being of criminal offenders such as… Make regular rounds Supervise inmate movements and activities Conduct contraband searches Maintain order Prepare reports Participate in offender rehabilitation Help to solve inmate problems

Treatment Programs Sing Sing has a number of educational, vocational and treatment programs. Special mental health programs that service the entire state include an Intermediate Care Program (ICP) Transitional Intermediate Care Program (TRICP) for inmates with mental illness, Residential Crisis Treatment Program (RCTP) for inmates experiencing serious mental health crises, and a Community Orientation and Reentry Program (CORP) for inmates with mental illness who are preparing for release..

Educational Sing Sing offers classes in .. Adult Basic Education (ABE) Pre-General Equivalency Diploma (Pre-GED), General Equivalency Diploma (GED), English as a Second Language(ESL). The facility also offers cell study programs for inmates in the SHU. Associate, Bachelor and Master’s degree programs. Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison sponsors an Associate and Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science through Mercy College and the New York Theological Seminary sponsors a Master’s degree in Professional Studies

Vocational Sing Sing vocational classes offers building maintenance computer repair custodial maintenance, electrical trades small engine repair welding, and plumbing/heating

Technology Communication is done through microphones and wall speakers, while inmate-wristbands trigger door and gate movements and provide access to inmate programs and services. Radio-frequency identification tracking (RFID), a monitoring process where an inmate wears an electronic bracelet that tracks his or her movement throughout a facility.
