The Circulatory System. Function  Consists of the heart and blood vessels  Carries oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells and remove carbon dioxide.
Circulatory System Transports nutrients and oxygen to the body cells Transports waste products (carbon dioxide, excess water, salts) away from the body.
The Circulatory System. 3 Main Functions 1. Transport Oxygen from lungs 2. Transport Carbon Dioxide to lungs 3. Carry nutrients to body.

Circulatory System PART II

Atrioventricular Valve Aorta Left Pulmonary Artery Superior Vena Cava Right Pulmonary artery Right Pulmonary Veins Left Pulmonary Veins Left Atrium Right Atrium Bicuspid Valve Atrioventricular Valve Semilunar Valve Right Ventricle Left Ventricle Inferior Vena Cava Artery

HEART VALVES Bicupsid atrioventricular valve Tricupsid atrioventricular valve Aortic semilunar valve Pulmonary semilunar valve

Pulmonary vs. Systemic circuit

Blood Vessels

Blood Vessels Blood Vessels Veins Arteries Capillaries Very thin and only one cell layer thick Connects the arteries and veins. Allows gas exchange in lungs and tissues Thick muscle wall to help push the blood away from the heart Carries blood away from the heart Thinner muscle wall Contains valves which help push blood against gravity Carries blood towards the heart.

Transporting Blood Against Gravity

Gas Exchange (Capillaries) The capillary will deliver oxygen to the tissues due to the low concentrations in the cell. The capillary will deliver carbon dioxide to the lungs/alveoli due to the low concentrations of CO2.

Blood Components An individual has approximately 5L of blood. 55% of the blood is liquid 45% is composed of blood cells

BLOOD COMPONENTS Plasma: Fluid medium that helps transport materials Consists of a number of proteins that play important roles to protect the body.

BLOOD COMPONENTS 2) Erythtocytes (Red Blood Cells): Hemoglobin helps to carry the O2. Transport O2 to other tissues in the body.

BLOOD COMPONENTS 3) Leukocytes (White Blood Cells) Protects body against microbes Less than RBC Part of your immune system response

BLOOD COMPONENTS 4) Platelets: Produced in the bone marrow Helps with blood clotting Become active and rupture when you cut yourself Reacts with proteins in plasma to create a mesh Video
