Standard Identify and Investigate the general functions of the major systems of the human body (circulatory, respiratory, and musculoskeletal) and describe ways these systems interact with each other to maintain Homeostasis

Objective Students will identify and/or describe the general fuctions of the major systems (Circulatory and Respiratory Systems) of the human body Students will identify and/or describe how the major systems of the human body interact to maintain Homeostasis

Vocab Circulatory System: the system that circulates blood and lymph through the body Heart: muscular organ that pumps the blood through the circulatory system Lungs: pair of organs in the ribs, consisting of sacs were air is inhaled, so that oxygen can pass into the blood and carbon dioxide be removed Respiratory System: set of organs that allows a person to breathe and exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body

Essential Question How do the Circulatory and Respiratory Systems work together to allow the body to maintain homeostasis?

Circulatory System -The Circulatory System includes both the Cardiovascular System and Lymphatic System -The heart pumps blood around the body, which serves as a transport system for cells, chemical messages and removing wastes.

Blood -Blood contains cells, fluid and other substances -Arteries carry blood away from the heart -Veins carry blood back to your heart -Capillaries exchange Nutrients, Oxygen and other substances throughout the body

Blood (cont) -Plasma is the liquid part of the blood. It contains the nutrients and red and white blood cells -Red blood cells carry oxygen to every cell in your body -White blood cells fights pathogens to keep you healthy

Respiratory System -Takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide -Exchanges these substances via capillaries -Nose takes in oxygen, it goes down your throat, and splits into the larynx, which vibrates to make you speak, and the trachea, which goes into the lungs. -Alveoli is in the lungs surrounded by blood vessels, which when you breathe air is sucked into and out of them

Homeostasis -The respiratory system allows for entry of oxygen and releases carbon dioxide -The circulatory system carries the blood around the body -They work together to exchange gas, which is maintaining homeostasis

Homeostasis (cont) -If the circulatory system stopped functioning, oxygen couldn't be carried around the body -If the respiratory system stopped functioning, oxygen couldn't be able to enter the body
