Opening Assignment 1. Mass is the same thing as weight. Write down these 3 sentences.. If you think it is true…do NOT change the underlined word.. If you think it is false, write how you would change it (above the underline). 1. Mass is the same thing as weight. 2. If I were to go to the moon, I would weigh about 10 pounds less. 3. If I were to go to Jupiter, I would weigh a lot less because it is so far away from Earth.

Your notes Definition / Important information/pictures & examples Key terms/main ideas Weight Mass Measurement Exit card

What is the difference between mass and weight?

If you were to go to another planet would you still weight the same?

Weight Weight Your weight is a measure of the force of gravity on you.

150 lb person’s weight on the moon

Take a guess….How much would a 150lb person weigh on…. Planet Weight Venus Mars Jupiter Mercury Neptune Sun

Complete the sentence starters 1. Mass is a ___________ of the amount of __________ in an object. 2. Matter is anything that has _______ and _________________ 3. Weight is a ____________ of the force of ___________ on you! 4. On the moon you would _____________ than you would on Earth. Word bank (some words are used more than once or not at all) Measurement gravity Weigh less Weigh more Matter Takes up space

How much would you weigh on other planets? Your Weight Venus 126.7 lbs Mars 52.7 lbs Jupiter 330.9 lbs Mercury 52.9 lbs Neptune 157.5 lbs

Weight Why is a person’s weight different on the moon/Jupiter??? The moon exerts much less gravitational force on you!

Compare to Jupiter Jupiter exerts a much greater force on you!

Weight Why is the pull of gravity different? Your weight is a measure of the pull of gravity between you and the planet you are standing on. This force of gravity depends on mass of the planet you are standing on. Massive planet (great mass)---- the greater the gravitational pull  the more you weigh Small planet (small mass) – there will be less gravitational pull on you  you weigh less.

Mass Answer this question….. Does your mass change if you go to the moon or Jupiter? Mass is different than weight!!!!! Mass is the amount of matter (stuff) in an object If you were to travel to the moon or to Jupiter, your mass would not change. You would still look the same!

Exit Card 1. A lot of people think mass and weight mean the same thing, but they do not. How are they different? 2. Explain your answer by explaining what happens to your weight if you were to go to another planet or the moon.

Units of Measurement Mass vs Weight To measure matter, scientists use the International System of Units (SI units) Mass --- grams/kilograms Weigh - Newtons

Prefixes are used in front of units of measurement Grams – unit of measurement for mass “Kilo” – means 1,000 So 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams “Milli” = 1/1000th or 0.001 What does 1 milligram mean?
