The Tropical Rainforest Sherelle Streeter APES

WORLD DISTRIBUTION Central America Central Africa Southern Asia From India and Buma (W) to Java and Borneo (E) Australia, New Zealand, and New Guinea Island Approximately 6% of earth’s surface

Major Characteristics... Elevation: 0-1,000 meters Geological structure: Poor Soil Tall Trees Swampy waters Climate: Humid Moist Hot Wet Temperature: Avg.: 77 degrees Fahrenheit

Major Characteristics Rainfall: Avg. 250 cm/ year 4 in./month Snowfall: None. Temperatures are too warm Seasons: Rainy/hot during winter/spring months, Mild less rain during summer/fall months

Major Characteristics Winds: Trade winds blow in the same latitude– moisture from the sea (brings rain) and desert dust (enrich soil) The higher the elevation, the more wind received Wind speed max: 3 meters/ sec.

This projects the average rainfall in millimeters in relation to the average temperature in Celsius. There is more rainfall in the winter/spring months. AS the temperature increases so does the amount of rain; their corresponding. RAINFALL GRAPH

Plants and Animals… Plants: Bromeliads Strangler Fig Lianas Orchids

Plants and Animals Animals: Scarlet Macaw Red-Eyed Tree Frog Capuchin Monkeys Red-Eyed Tree Frog Anaconda

Indigenous People 50 million indigenous people inhabit Tropical Rainforest They: Grow crops Use western goods Make reg. trips to town for foods Use medicinal plants for illnesses People: Pygmies, Mbuti (Africa) Dayaks, Orangulu (Asia) Yanomami (Brazil) Kuku-Yalanji (NE Australia)

Anthropogenic Problems… Deforestation (cutting down trees) Overexploitation (over hunting animals until their returns are diminished) This chart shows the distribution of deforestation in Tropical Rainforests global regions Deforestation occurs more in South America than any other tropical country. Africa, ranking second.

Anthropogenic Problems… This chart is a more in-depth version of the prior graph. Brazil , located in South America, deals with the most deforestation. Venezuela, Zimbabwe, DR CONGO, Nigeria, etc. are African countries that make up nearly the same amount of deforestation

Solving Problems Deforestation Overexploitation Tropical Forestry Action Plan (TFAP): launched in 1985 by the Food and Agricultural Organization Paper Recycling Campaigns Overexploitation Endangered Species ACT Fining individuals for hunting threatened/endangered species.
