Bacteria Bacteria need food and water to survive. You can slow down the growth of bacteria by refrigerating your food. Notice the flagella and cilia (movement) Bacteria are everywhere. Most bacteria are useful like those used in the production of yogurt, cheese and sourdough bread, but some are very harmful. What is Fungi good for? Fungi can be good to eat, like some mushrooms or foods made from yeast, like bread. Molds from fungi are used to make cheeses. Penicillin, perhaps the most famous of all antibiotic drugs, is derived from a common fungus called Penicillium. Many other fungi also produce antibiotic substances, which are now widely used to control diseases in human and animal populations. Protists One way protists can be divided up is according to how they move. Cilia - Some protists use microscopic hair called cilia to move. These tiny hairs can flap together to help the organism move through water or other liquid. Flagella - Other protists have a long tail called flagella. This tail can move back and forth helping to propel the organism. Pseudopodia - This is when the protist extends part of its cell body to scoot or ooze along. Amoebas use this method to move. Giardia is a protist that can make you very sick.

Viruses Aren’t living organisms, they need a host to survive. Influenza (flu) is a common virus.
