Energy Transfer

Is the ability to do work! Energy Is the ability to do work!

The Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created nor destroyed (it can be transformed)

c Some Types of Energy Mechanical Energy: The energy of motion that does work Thermal Energy: heat energy Radiant Energy: Energy in the form of light and sound comes to us in waves Electrical Energy: Energy of moving electrons Chemical Energy: Energy stored in particles that make up food, fuel, and other matter/ energy stored in chemical bonds Nuclear Energy: Energy in the nuclei of atoms

Energy can be transferred from one system to another (or from a system to its environment) in different ways:

Thermally when a warmer object is in contact with a cooler one

Mechanically when two objects push or pull on each other over a distance

Electrically when an electrical source such as a battery or generator is connected in a complete circuit to an electrical device

Electromagnetic Waves

Energy can change from one form to another, although in the process some energy is always converted to heat.

Electrical energy can be produced from a variety of energy sources and can be transformed into almost any other form of energy.

Batteries store energy and transfer energy to components in a circuit Batteries store energy and transfer energy to components in a circuit. In the battery the energy comes from chemical reactions.

Electricity is important because we can use it to make so many things work (electrical energy). For example, a bulb converts electrical energy into light energy and a speaker converts it into sound energy.

Natural form of electrical energy can be seen in the lightning that appears during storms. Solar energy, water and wind power are sources of green energy—meaning they do not pollute the environment.

“Energy Transfer Examples” Pick a partner in your group (if there are three, you all work together) Come up with a “mini-skit” to SHOW an example of energy transfer. Pick any type of energy that you’d like. Write down what your example is. For example: pretend you are plugging in a vacuum cord and start vacuuming! (electrical to mechanical)
