Design Study on High Luminosity Colliders EUROCRAB submitted to EU-FP7 M. Biagini, LNF/INFN Vth SuperB Workshop Paris, May 9-11 2007

Why a Design Study? The SuperB accelerator design is based on a new idea A test of this idea will be performed at DAFNE late this year We need to set up a collaboration for studying the test results and other issues that have been raised on the feasibility of the collider scheme We need to study the accelerator in more detail than it is at present (CDR)

FP7 The FP7 framework is ideal to build a true international collaboration If we get approved we will be able in a very short time (beginning of 2008) to: hire new people to address the specific design issues freely collaborate with EU and overseas partners, without money issues perform R&D activities

FP7 Activities

Evaluation criteria for FP7

Objectives Study of new collision schemes and machine parameters to increase luminosity in colliders Design of a SuperB collider lattice, study of beam-beam and backgrounds, diagnostics and positron source for a Reference Design Report (RDR) Design of new Interaction Regions for: DAFNE upgrade with KLOE experiment LHC upgrade

Proposal preparation We had to prepare a proposal in a very short time (1 month): deadline was May 2nd The partners met by phone on March 30th and agreed on the work and funding requests to be proposed in the DS The proposal is a 59 pages document, available at: http://www.pi.infn.it/SuperB/?q=node/154

Will partecipate without EU Partners INFN (LNF, Pisa, RomaI), Italy CERN, Switzerland LAL/Orsay, France Liverpool University, UK INPL/Lyon, France Elettra/Trieste, Italy ESRF, France Daresbury, UK Soleil, France Will partecipate without funding

Non EU Partners BINP, Russia (is in ICPC list, can receive fundings) SLAC, USA KEK, Japan The deliverables will not depend on the work of the overseas partners. However their support will help us in studying fundamental issues Experts from the best worldwide accelerators Labs will gather to produce the best design

Work Packages We agreed on 6 Work Packages for a 3 years project The number is appropriate for the amount of money we ask for (3.5 Meuro) Each WP addresses key topics in order to meet the DS objectives Some prototyping will be done in WP6
