Energy Conversions

Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed but it can change forms. We call that energy conversion or transformation

Energy conversions Any conversion of energy ALWAYS include some thermal energy. Sometimes it is the result of friction, a force that opposes motion.

Closed system A closed system is a well-defined group of objects that transfer energy between one another. Ex. Roller coaster or a camera. All energy and all matter remain in the system. (This is not very realistic).

How to we determine energy conversions? Start with the energy you have then… …….list every energy that is a result of that first energy working!

What energy transformations happen in a blow dryer?

Blow dryer Electrical to thermal (heat) sound (noise) light (heat source) & kinetic/mechanical (fan)

What are the energy transformations that happen with a microwave?

Electrical to Light, thermal, sound & kinetic/mechanical Microwave Electrical to Light, thermal, sound & kinetic/mechanical

What are the energy transformations that happen when you drive a car?

Car Chemical energy (gas) to Light, sound, electrical, thermal, & kinetic/mechanical
