Pictograph Indian rock art, consisting of pictographs (drawing & paintings and petroglyphs (carvings) created by Native Americans, both prehistoric and historic, exist in more than 200 known sites in Texas. Pictographs have been found on cave walls or natural rock shelters, and they reflect many divergent Indian cultures. Native Americans used pigments from minerals and from plants to paint their pictograph stories. They used symbols and shapes to depict events in a tribe or an individual in hunting or warfare. Use a Pictograph Symbols folder and create a rough draft for a short Indian story. Once your rough draft is complete, neatly draw and color your symbols on a full sheet of paper or on brown paper from a grocery sack. Your story must have at least 3 sentences. Begin each sentence on a new line. Under each pictograph line or on the back, write the English version of each sentence. If you create a new symbol for your story, create a key. Include a geometric border around the edge of your paper.
