Usually 5-7 years.

THE SLAVE TRADE

** SLAVERY Some Africans worked as indentured servants and earned their freedom. The first Africans were brought against their will to Jamestown in 1619 to work on tobacco plantations and over time larger and larger numbers of enslaved Africans were forcibly brought to the Southern Colonies.

**SOUTHERN COLONIES SOCIAL LIFE PLANTATION OWNERS RULED. Virginia social structure based on status and ownership of land. Maintained an allegiance to the Church of England (Anglican) Closer social ties to Britain than did those in the other colonies.

**FUTURE CONFLICTS The development of a slavery based economy in the Southern colonies led to conflict between the North and South and the American Civil War
