Introduction The Australian Government Dept. Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population & Communities, highlighted need for a Better Practice Collections Resource for Local Governments National Waste Policy: Less Waste, More Resources – reduce the amount of waste for disposal and improve the use of waste as a resource Food and garden organics; priority material for landfill diversion Guidance required to help Local Government’s achieve this Hyder Consulting were commissioned in February 2012 to develop the manual

To research and produce guidance to: Project Objectives To research and produce guidance to: Provide councils with a ‘How to’ guide for planning and implementing a collection pilot scheme, and ultimately rolling out a food/green waste collection service to households; Identify barriers and opportunities, risks and mitigation measures, and staged scheme development milestones, including social aspects; and Support national consistency in approaches to organics recovery and diversion from landfill.

Why do we need this guidance? Organics represent 60% of the average Australian Household Bin (by weight) Achieving resource recovery targets Avoiding landfill levies Alleviating or avoiding carbon tax liabilities Reducing greenhouse gas emissions Better use of valuable resources Achieve behaviour change Organics are a ‘priority material’
