Haiti (continued) Toussaint L’Ouverture led an army to many victories Jean-Jacques Dessalines – took over where L’Ouverture left off & declared Haiti independent in 1804

South America Simón Bolívar led his native Venezuela to independence José de San Martín led his native Argentina to independence Together, Bolívar and Martín won independence from Spain for the rest of South America in 1824

Mexico Miguel Hidalgo first proposed Mexican independence José María Morelos picked up his fight against Spain Augustín de Iturbide finally declared Mexican independence in 1821

Brazil Declared independence from Portugal with a bloodless revolution in 1822
