In order to complete the Mendeley Software Features module, you need to install and register all of the necessary components on your laptop. See the following slides.
You will find information on both the slides and the Notes box under the slides as well. Click on the icon at the bottom of the screen to view the notes. Please bring your laptop to the workshop.
Overview of what you will do: Install browser (if necessary - unlikely) Install MS Word (if necessary) Register for a Mendeley account (only) Download the Mendeley desktop application Install Mendeley MS Word Plugin Install the Mendeley Web Importer There are a couple of components that you must have in place in order for Mendeley to work for you. Current browser Compatible version of Microsoft Word Once you have the proper tools and software installed, you will: Register for a Mendeley account Download the desktop version. Install the MS Word plugin – you need this so you can cite while you write. The following slides will walk you through this process.

The links are embedded in the PPT slide, and listed below as well, for your convenience. To access the links in the PPT - click on the Slide Show tab/ click on the icon “From Current Slide” and then click the appropriate link to go to the webpage and follow the installation instructions. Identify the word processing software (on your laptop) You will need a recent/compatible version of MS Word or Libre Office. Mendeley is NOT compatible with Pages. If you don’t have MS Word, go to the next slide. If you do have MS Word, follow the instructions below to find which version: PC: Open Word, click on File Click on Account, then ‘About Word’ Look at the date on the top of the pop-up window and proceed to the next page. Mac: Open Word Click on the “Word” menu option, then “About Word”. Look at the year on the top of the pop-up window and proceed to the next page. Next, you need to be sure that you have a recent AND compatible version of either Microsoft Word or Libre Office installed. MAC users, please note that Mendeley is NOT compatible with Pages. This slide provides instructions on how to check which version of Word you have installed. The next slide will discuss which versions are compatible.
Install/Update MS Word (if necessary) Check below to see if you have a compatible version of MS Word installed on your computer. Note: Word 2008 for Mac is not supported. See the slide to determine whether you have a compatible version of Word installed. Please note, Word 2008 for Mac is NOT supported. Register for a free Mendeley account mendeley.com Now you are ready to install Mendeley. The first step is to register for a free Mendeley account: Go to mendeley.com You’ll see the Sign in box that you will use to access your account in the future, but to register for an account you will click on the link in the top right corner. You will use the email address and password that you select here to log in to the different versions of Mendeley.
Download Desktop Application Once you have registered you will be in the online version of Mendeley, click on the dropdown menu to the far right to download Mendeley Desktop. You will be prompted to download the appropriate version of Mendeley Desktop for your computer.
Open the Desktop Application
Install the Citation Plug-in You will now be in the Desktop version of Mendeley. Next we need to install the MS Word Plug In (or Libre Office). Click on Tools/Install MS Word Plugin (or the alternative Install LibreOffice Plugin). You will see the prompt to install the plugin. (2/23/18—emailed the vendor because Libre Office link does not show up as option even though according to website it should). Once installed, the citation plugin will appear in your Microsoft Word document. Its appearance will vary slightly depending on your operating system and version of Word, but you will see the same buttons and options in both. To check to see if it is there, open up a Word document and follow the instructions below based on the type of computer you are using. MAC: Toolbars / View Mendeley Toolbar – will pop up as a stand alone toolbar OR References / opens Mendeley options in the static ribbon PC – References / Mendeley Cite-O-Matic IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE WITH ANY OF THE STEPS ABOVE, PLEASE COME TO CLASS 30 MINUTES EARLY FOR ASSISTANCE.
Install the Web Importer Next we need to install the Web Importer. Click on Tools/Install Web Importer.
Next, click on the “Download browser extension” link. Click on the browser icon. Click on “Download browser extension” link. 3. The Mendeley icon will show up in the top right corner of your browser. On the next screen, click on the icon for the browser you are currently using. For this example we have selected Firefox. Next, click on the “Download browser extension” link. The Mendeley icon will show up in the top right corner of your browser. If you would like to add the web importer to another browser, you must open that browser and then repeat the steps above.
