Identify information technology equipment/software and operating systems supported by the organization By Jack+ Aaron

Computer Equipment A Typical workstation has a monitor, keyboard, mouse and system unit, or main box. There may also be speakers and other bits of hardware. Usually the different devices are connected to the main box by cables or power cords. However some of these devices can be connected by using a wireless device.

A System Unit The system unit involves both the supporting frame and protective cover. In some computers the monitor, speaker and system unit are all inside the screen. Inside the system unit you will see the main board, or motherboard. Which contains the central processing unit (CPU), along with many other things.

Peripherals Peripheral devices are things that are outside the computer most commonly attached with cables. The most commons devices are a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speaker and printer. Other peripherals that are commonly used are head sets, microphones and external storage devices.

Scanner A scanner is an input device that allows the user to scan photos or drawings into a computer. Scanners work by reflecting light off the image, and record how much is bounced back into the scanner lens. This information is then passed back into the computer where it begins to create a replica of the image. Scanners usually come with optical character recognition (OCR) software, which allows text to scanned into the computer instead of being typed in. Most OCR software still requires the user to check for mistakes in the scanned text because it's possible for the scanner to make mistakes by misreading the text.

Software So far we've discussed the hardware and peripherals used in an IT environment. Now we will talk about the different types of software in the computers.

System Software System software is a broad term to describe any of the software that is involved with the efficient running of the computer system. A major part of the system software is called the operating system. It performs basic tasks such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.
