Technology for Teaching GTA Seminar 2008

E-mail @psu.edu ANGEL mail @math.psu.edu Students will e-mail this account. Set a forwarding address at https://www.work.psu.edu/ ANGEL mail If you activate your course on ANGEL, students will e-mail this account. Set forwarding through ANGEL. @math.psu.edu POP- downloads to local machine IMAP- lets you read them on a local machine, but leaves them on the mathnet servers Webmail- https://webmail.math.psu.edu/ Can be forwarded

ANGEL http://www.angel.psu.edu/ Easily e-mail all of your students. Post files for your students to access. Record grades where students can check them at any time. Set up a course website, or link to one you have already made.

Initially, courses are disabled and will not be seen by students. To activate a course, click on settings.

Set “Course Disabled” to “No”

Under the “Communicate” tab, you can forward all ANGEL messages to your e-mail account. Click on “Read Course Mail.”

Click on “Preferences.”

Forward all ANGEL messages to the e-mail account you check regularly.

ANGEL provides a convenient way to e-mail your entire class– the roster is automatically updated as students add or drop your course.

Check this box so that students will get e-mails without having to check the ANGEL website.

You can view the course roster on ANGEL or on eLion.

Requesting that students post photos on ANGEL is a good way to learn a lot of names. (Or remember any you’ve forgotten!)

You should post your syllabus on ANGEL, and you can list exam and quiz dates on the calendar. Most of the content you add to ANGEL will fall under the “Lessons” tab.

ANGEL includes software for writing a website. Or, you can just add a link to the course website. You can post practice exams, solutions, and other files directly to ANGEL for your students. You can also create surveys, quizzes, and discussion forums for your class.

Under the “Manage” tab, you can set up an ANGEL gradebook to let students check their grades at any time, and to provide a backup to any local copies of your class grades.

I usually skip the “Gradebook Wizard” and simply create the categories and assignments I will use myself.

You can choose the categories, their point values, and even have ANGEL automatically drop the lowest couple homework scores.

You need to add each assignment before grades can be entered.

I like to import the grades from a spreadsheet.

I like to import the grades from a spreadsheet.

Select which assignment is recorded in which column, and ANGEL will enter the grades from the spreadsheet.

ANGEL links http://www.angel.psu.edu/ http://ets.tlt.psu.edu/angel/ Extensive help and tutorials are available. You can contact ANGEL support. http://ets.tlt.psu.edu/angel/ ANGEL Community Hub Ask and answer questions of other instructors using ANGEL

eLion http://www.elion.psu.edu/ You can view class rosters on eLion. eLion is used for early progress reports. Your assigned final exam time and room are posted on eLion. Final grades for the course are entered on eLion

You can find your assigned final exam time and location on eLion; and you will enter the final grades for the course here.

eLion also has a current class roster.

eLion links http://www.elion.psu.edu/ http://www.math.psu.edu/UG/how_to_enter_grades.htm - shows how to enter grades manually on eLion. You can also import final grades directly from an ANGEL gradebook.

Room Reservation http://www.math.psu.edu/UG/reservations.htm Reserve a classroom for a review session.

Connecting from a Laptop http://www.math.psu.edu/mathnet/mdoc/md15/ For wired access in your office, you will need to contact helpdesk@science.psu.edu to activate the port by your desk For wireless access, you need to install a VPN client, and follow the setup instructions on the page above.

Setting up a Website http://www.math.psu.edu/mathnet/mdoc/md23/ You can create a website in your home directory on mathnet. You must create a www directory, and ask helpdesk@science.psu.edu to activate it. Some basic templates are available here. You must manage file permission and security, so that your website is viewable to others, but private files are not.

File Permissions Simple explanations of setting file permissions: http://www.math.psu.edu/mathnet/mdoc/md13/ http://www.math.psu.edu/roe/gta-train/perms.html http://alexia.lis.uiuc.edu/manual/unix/perm.html A more thorough introduction to file permissions. The default is that files are readable by everyone– so you should create a private directory if you want to store grades, exam drafts, or private files on mathnet.

LaTeX http://www.math.psu.edu/mathnet/mdoc/md10/ Several introductions and tutorials for LaTeX, lists of commands for quick coding. You can e-mail questions to tex@math.psu.edu Basic exam template at http://www.math.psu.edu/roe/gta-train/latex-exam.tex

Teaching Aids You can reserve and borrow a projector from 107 McAllister You can scan documents in 115 McAllister http://www.math.psu.edu/mathnet/mdoc/md16 You can print or copy to transperencies http://www.math.psu.edu/mathnet/mdoc/md4/ Be sure to use transperencies designed for printing!
