Any Questions?

Screenshots and Screencasts Objective: Participants will learn how to leverage screen capture and screen recording tools to deliver instruction in a blended or flipped environment. Participants will also explore how students can create their own screen capture or screen recording in order to demonstrate their understanding of new content.

What is a Screenshot? What is a Screencast? An image that a user captures of the computer display Also called screen capture, screen grab, print screen What is a Screencast? A digital recording of changes on the computer screen, often containing audio narration and sometimes including annotations. Also called video screen capture

http://blnds.co/1uiOJXF Guiding questions: What was the creator’s purpose? Does it successfully fulfill that purpose? If so, how? If not, why not? The link and QR code both take you to a Blendspace with four examples of screenshots and screencasts. Give participants time to view and discuss. At this point, you just want to activate their prior knowledge and expose them to some examples.

What are the Benefits? Self-paced learning Just-in-time instruction Anywhere, anytime access Reusable content Can be used for authentic products (digital storytelling)

How might screenshots or screencasts help YOU create a more learner centered environment?

Creating Screenshots Determine purpose Set the stage: Capture Open and arrange programs Select screenshot tool Capture Annotate and edit if needed Purpose: Will a screenshot enhance your project/product? What do you really need to include in the picture? What information needs to be highlighted? Stage: Have all the programs open in advance… resize the windows, scroll down, etc. Capture: Do you want a regular shape (rectangle) or an irregular shape (free-form) Annotate: Would it be easier to edit mistakes or just re-take the screenshot?

Snipping Tool Available on all Windows 7 and 8 computers. Takes a “snip” or picture of the desktop. Snips can be rectangular, free-form, window, or full screen. Has a simple pen or highlighter tool for annotation. Snips can be saved, copied, or emailed. Let the participants know that clicking on the title of this slide will take them to the Tool Resource page on the ODL Resource wiki. Demonstrate the snipping tool with its various settings. Alternatively- show the tutorial video on the tool resource page: https://bcpsodl.pbworks.com/w/page/86882242/Snipping Tool

Your Turn! Give participants some options for what they can take a screenshot of: On the BCPS home page, where can you click to find a list of schools? From the desktop, how can you switch to the Windows 8 apps view? In PowerPoint, where can you find the slide transition settings? Other…

ActivInspire Camera Tool Tutorial How to Print Screen Jing Tutorials ActivInspire Camera Tool Tutorial MimioStudio Screen Clipping Tutorial Video Explain that there are other screenshot tools: Print Screen- button on all windows computers, captures image to clipboard Jing- needs to be installed by someone with administrative rights, but provides different annotation options like shapes, lines, arrows, and text boxes ActivInspire and MimioStudio both have built-in clipping tools that can be used for the same purpose as the Snipping Tool

Creating Screencasts Determine objective and audience Write a 2-5 min screencast script Practice script and accompanying actions Prepare and test materials Microphone Headphone Webcam (optional) Open and arrange programs Select screencast tool Edit if needed (Windows MovieMaker) Objective/Audience: Just like a lesson, think about your instructional goal and your desired audience Script: Effective Screencasts are 2-5 minutes. So plan your script carefully. If you need more time for a concept, then record it in chunks. Practice, practice, practice Prepare: An external microphone might help cancel out background noise and pick up your voice more clearly (but it’s not necessary). Webcam is only important if you want to be seen. Have your programs open and ready to record. If you want to create a white-board style screencast, then open ActivInspire, Mimio, Paint, or some other drawing program. Edit: some tools have basic editors, but if not, you can use Windows MovieMaker. It’s best if you can create your screencast in one take and not have to edit it.

Screencast-o-matic Web-based Records action on the computer screen including mouse movements and clicks. 15 minute recording time. Ability to record audio and/or overlay video from a webcam. Can embed “pop-up” notes at specific time intervals throughout the video. Saves in multiple formats directly to the computer. Let the participants know that clicking on the title of this slide will take them to the Tool Resource page on the ODL Resource wiki. Demonstrate Screencast-o-matic. NOTE: when starting SOM, users must “allow” any java or flash to run. In addition, if it prompts them to update something, have them try “ignoring” the update to run it anyway. Alternatively- show the tutorial video on the tool resource page: https://bcpsodl.pbworks.com/w/page/86875558/Screencast%20O%20Matic

Your Turn! Give participants some options for what they can take a screencast of: How to do two-digit addition. Where to find the Tool Resource pages on the ODL Resource wiki. How to use the spell-check in Word. How to add animations to a PowerPoint. Other…

ActivInspire Screen Recorder Tutorial Jing Tutorials ActivInspire Screen Recorder Tutorial MimioStudio Screen Recorder Tutorial Video Explain that there are other screencasting tools: Jing- needs to be installed by someone with administrative rights ActivInspire and MimioStudio both have built-in recording tools that can be used for the same purpose as Screencast-o-matic

Sharing your Masterpiece Shared Drive Wiki Document or presentation SchoolTube Edmodo Shared drive: only accessible within the BCPS network, but more reliable than Internet access Wiki: if you already have one, screenshot images would be easy to embed. Screencast videos would need to be downloaded by the viewer. Document or Presentation: depending on how you want to use it, you could easily make a document that you can print out or embed it in a presentation to be displayed or viewed SchoolTube: a safer alternative to YouTube and it’s not blocked for students. Set up your account as a BCPS teacher and you can upload screencasts for your students. Edmodo: easy to upload and post screencasts and screenshots

Assessment Describe one place in an upcoming lesson or unit where you can use either screenshots or screencasts to make the instruction more learner centered Use your preferred method to capture their responses: Padlet, Survey Monkey, email, written, group sharing, etc
