Enterprise High School EHS- Strive to be the BEST! January 15, 2014

Learning Target Let’s collaborate and work as a team to develop positive relationships Let’s identify our own leadership style and the styles of my colleagues to promote professional learning through communication and collaboration. Snell

LEARNING COMMUNITIES Professional learning that increases educator effectiveness and results for all students and where everyone is committed to continuous improvement, collective responsibility, and goal alignment. Snell Dr. Wright discussed on Jan 2nd the shift from teachers working exclusively with students to now forming professional learning communities made up of teachers, students, parents, and administrators. We have developed professional learning communities and we have involved students and parents in some of those committees. We want to continue to develop and grow PLC’s that meet our needs and get better at working together on a daily basis.

“We have to be going in the same direction if we’re going to reach a common result. The entire time I’m in the district, we’ll be talking about getting on the same page about what good instruction looks like. I think that’s hugely important.” Dr. Camille Wright We want to come to the place where everyone has a shared understanding of and commitment to what we are trying to create for students and adults in our school. And continue to improve on that vision each and every day. Take 2 sticky note Pick one in red. Write a question that you have about it. Write a statement you would like to make about it. Dr. Wright also stated that, “we can only give the support if you reflect on your needs openly and honestly”.

Partnership Principles Equality Choice Voice Reflection Dialogue Praxis Reciprocity These are the 7 partnership principles that are the basis for successful team interactions according to Jim Knight As we continue our professional development this semester, we are going to continue to discuss and practice these partnership principles. The better we get at these core beliefs, the more we can excel in classroom management, content planning, instruction, and assessment. (What Mr. Knight calls “The Big 4”) VIDEO In today’s activity, we are going to practice voice, reflection, and dialogue.

Activity : The Compass – An Informal Leadership Style Inventory WHAT? North, South, East or West WHY? To understand the leadership style of all members of our team HOW? Individually read each of the four directions and decide which one best describes you. Then proceed to the section of the room labeled with that compass direction

East West North The Compass South Speculating – likes to look at the big picture and the possibilities before acting. Laid back. Has difficulty making a decision. West Paying attention to detail —likes to know the who, what, when, where and why before acting. “The Planner” North Acting –“Just do it;” Likes to act, try things, plunge in. The Compass Teachers choose a direction that bests describes their style/personality. Move to the area of the room labeled with your direction. Teachers should get in groups of 5 or less. Each group will need a recorder, reporter, and time keeper Divide your chart paper into 4 equal sections and answer the 4 questions on the slide. (15 min) Top left = strengths Top right = limitations Bottom left = most difficult to work with Bottom right = need to know about you South Caring – likes to know that everyone’s feelings have been taken into consideration and that their voices have been heard before acting.

The Compass What are the strengths of your style? (4 adjectives) 2.What are the limitations of your style? (4 adjectives) 3. What style do you find most difficult to work with and why? 4.Explain what the other “directions” need to know about you so that you can work together effectively. Divide your chart paper into 4 equal sections and answer the 4 questions on the slide. (12 min) Top left = strengths Top right = limitations Bottom left = most difficult to work with Bottom right = need to know about you Share out

Benefits of Effective Teamwork Substantial gains in student achievement Higher-quality solutions to problems Increased confidence among all Teacher’s ability to support one another Ability to examine and test new ideas, methods, & materials More systematic assistance to beginning teachers Expanded pool of ideas, materials, and methods Schmoker, Results, p. 12. Most likely will not use…..

“ Education is entering an era of teachers helping teachers…..” “When we’re all working together to improve an we’re collectively responsible for student achievement, that’s when it’s beautiful.” ~Dr. Camille Wright
