Unit: 3 The Unicorn in Captivity

Tapestry is from the Renaissance era 14th- 17th century in Europe When we think of the Renaissance we may think of Castles, Royalty and knights in shining armor. The word Renaissance means “Rebirth” coming out of the dark. It was a rebirth of: education, science, art, literature and music.

A TAPESTRY is like a very large woven carpet, but it is not meant to go on the floor. These were made to cover the large walls of castles to decorate and to keep the rooms warm, like blankets for the walls.

The Unicorn in Captivity The Unicorn Tapestries are series of tapestries that come from Renaissance period and are some of the most beautiful and complex works of art from this time period. What is happening in image? Does it tell a story? What colors do you see? What do you think it’s made from? It actual size is: 12 feet x 12 feet

A Closer Look What is the red drops under the neck and on the body of the unicorn? What do you think that symbolizes? Do you think the unicorn can jump out of fence? Why do you think he’s wild or tame?

Medieval Symbolism In medieval Art everything stood for something. The symbolism was familiar to all, in which animals and plants contained different moral messages for humans, based on traits or behavior. Loyal, beloved tamed Magical and elusive King of Beasts; strong and faithful Clever, faithful and loyal What animal would symbolize you?
