Review the Scoring: Then Grade Your Score Description 8-9 The evidence and explanations used are appropriate and convincing, and the argument is especially coherent and well developed. The prose demonstrates a consistent ability to control a wide range of the elements of effective writing. 6-7 The evidence and explanations used are appropriate and sufficient, and the argument is coherent and adequately developed. The writing may contain lapses in diction or syntax, but generally the prose is clear. 4-5 Some evidence or explanations used may be inappropriate, insufficient, or unconvincing. The argument has lapses in coherence or be inadequately developed. The student’s ideas are clear but inconsistent in controlling the elements of effective writing. 2-3 These essays may misunderstand the prompt, or respond with unrelated, inaccurate, or inappropriate explanation. They often demonstrate weaknesses in writing, such as grammatical problems, a lack of development/organization, or a lack of coherence and control. 0-1 Very little or no response

Transitions Practice: Fix it Providence students should continue reading antiquated books to enrich their knowledge, culture, creativity, and understanding of the author’s point of view. This will be a way to incentivize students to continue reading for a future generation. But, it is true that some readers might find it difficult to comprehend due to the complex vocabulary, such as “rankle, imbibe, repine, brink, etc.” found in the Frankenstein novel. However, it is part of our learning to search for the meaning and as a result a better understanding of what is happening throughout the book. Reading old-fashioned books with difficult words and phrases will improve a reader’s vocabulary and eloquence so they could easily read and write with less difficulty. As well as this, vocabulary develops the same quality of writing in students.

Essay # 3 (yes, we’ve skipped #1---for now) The AP Argument Essay Essay # 3 (yes, we’ve skipped #1---for now)

The Argument Essay Format Introduction that brings up the bigger ideas Always the first sentence Inspiration Text An article, quote, or summary of a philosophy Assignment What you actually have to do End notice Yay! No more essay prompts! Check out the space to plan!

ACES: Tips and Tricks ATTACK the prompt! Think about the issues of integrity raised in this article. Then write an essay in which you explain your position on the role of integrity in academics and the work place. Use appropriate evidence from your reading, experience, or observations to support your argument. WE SHOULD…. make integrity an important focus in the academic and work world every time.

ACES! CHOOSE your side! Integrity #1 focus every time! Integrity is not #1 issue every time! In school, students don’t learn if they copy If a business sets guidelines for responsible behavior, they should enforce it every time. The issue may not be integrity, but the students not understanding the assignment or the reading they are trying to cite from. Business leaders have to look at each situation differently, and make fair decisions

ACES! Provide EXAMPLES Integrity #1 focus every time! Integrity is not #1 issue every time! In school, students don’t learn if they copy Ms. Pelton’s biology project was meant to have students show what they knew about a topic they were learning about, and if they copy it, they don’t learn how to research or what the content says. If a business sets guidelines for responsible behavior, they should enforce it every time. Kid’s won’t copy if they know there is a consequence, much like laws/codes of ethics keep bank teller from stealing patron’s money for fear of prosecution. The issue may not be integrity, but the students not understanding the assignment or the reading they are trying to cite from. With some of the students I work with, they don’t know what paraphrasing is, so they just change a few words. This counts as plagiarism, though they didn’t mean to do it. (to Refute: If a teacher has taught them to do the project, they have no excuse) Business leaders have to look at each situation differently, and make fair decisions All students failing is extreme— may show teacher made a mistake.

Homework: Due Tuesday Complete the ACES! Practice Activity sheet.

Get your homework out, and get ready to write! DO NOW March 3, 2014 Get your homework out, and get ready to write!

Assuming it would take you ten minutes to go through ACES… Write for 30 minutes on the topic on which you chose to complete your homework . GOAL: To find out how far you can reasonably get in the amount of time you ACTUALLY have for the exam. Timing Check:

Time to Compare! Pride Crime Group, go to computer wall. Read the three essays, and then decide which most closely matches what you wrote. Yes, you must read them all. Wealthy Sin Group, go to window wall. Read the three essays, and then decide which most closely matches what you wrote. Yes, you must read them all.
