The Prince What type of leader did Machiavelli want? What is Machiavelli’s ideal government? Would you like to live under a Machiavellian government? What does this remind you of?

What are some differences you notice? Why do we see this change? Virgin and Child, 1563 Madonna Enthroned, 1350s

Humanism Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man Focusing on the study and progress of humans and our life/ experience on earth. Study of humans and exploration of the human experience becomes the major focus. Moving away from medieval focus on the divine and supernatural.

Secular NOT Religious no religious or spiritual basis During the Renaissance people were separating from the Church and creating institutions that were not connected to religion. Some kings were breaking from the Church.

Indulgences According to some Popes, sinners could pay a fee to the Church and they would be then assured a quicker acceptance into Heaven In the words of Jayke: “Tickets to Heaven”

Dishonest actions by people in power, typically involving bribery Corruption Dishonest actions by people in power, typically involving bribery

Protestant Reformation The protest movement against the Catholic Church during the Renaissance

A religious group that has broken away from the church Sect A religious group that has broken away from the church

Patron/ Patronage support that kings, popes and the wealthy have provided to artists such as musicians, painters, and sculptors. Money given to support the arts.

Almost looks like a photo Realism Almost looks like a photo representing a person, thing, or situation accurately or in a way that is true to life Not realistic

Image of Christ in a Cathedral Europe was Emerging from its “Dark Age” and art in Europe reflected that change Decline of Catholic Church and the Reformation = less control over what art is produced so art became more secular Increased focus on learning about our world and humanity = everyday people focus in art and humanism Trade and contact with the Islamic Empire = advances in science and medicine added to realism in art Rebirth of Greco-Roman art, architecture and interest Bacchus and Ariadne, c. 1520-1523 By Titian (Tish-an) Image of Christ in a Cathedral c. 1000, By unknown artist

Corruption & Problems in the Catholic Church Monk Partaking of the communal wine Closed-mindedness: Thinking about the universe or science in new ways was not allowed. Scientific exploration restricted (especially with medicine). Acceptance of other faiths was not tolerated Pope’s getting caught up in politics: Starting wars with monarchs, plotting against kings who were too powerful, etc. Corruption: In order to get more money, some pope’s started selling indulgences: ticket to heaven; forgive sinful behavior (put simply) Using power to support unsavory behavior... Popes and other catholic leaders would over drink, over eat and even had concubines… this “non-Christian” behavior angered followers Although early protestors were executed by The Church, all these events still led up to the Protestant Reformation Pope Boniface VIII Papacy: 1294-1303 Banned use of cadavers in medicine one Pope Pius II wrote an erotic book … this was in the 1400s however

Martin Luther is NOT Martin Luther King Jr.!!!!! Protested indulgences. Not in the Bible Pope doesn’t decide who goes to Heaven, God does Christians “are saved” through faith: not money. Indulgences as salvation would mean that poor people couldn’t get into Heaven Wrote 95 Theses against The Church. These were posted on a church door, printed, and distributed for all of Europe to read Luther was excommunicated, declared an outlaw, and hailed as a hero. Martin Luther: 1517 Martin Luther is NOT Martin Luther King Jr.!!!!! Martin Luther King Jr. 1963

Martin Luther the Humanist He believed That EVERYONE should have access to the Church: Not just Popes and priests. This meant that he believed… Ordinary people should be able to read the Bible, so it was translated into German (the common vernacular & Luther’s language) Every town should have a school so kids could learn how to read the Bible Church services should be simple, so everyone can understand and take part in them No more indulgences, confession, prayers to saints. Church should be about improving THIS life, not worrying about the next. LARGE POINT OF DIFFERNCE  Protestants: you can access God and heaven personally and do not need the institution of the Church = Humanistic Catholics: You need the Church and religious leaders to help you access God and Heaven Printing Press: making information and knowledge accessible to the masses = literacy increase
