Computing at KS1 – session 3

SOL task – unplugged activity

Last week and this week This week

Learning outcomes Information technology Be able to explain how some uses of IT can support learning Digital literacy Know where to find useful resources for e-safety

Information technology 2nd strand of National Curriculum. Could include use of photos, creation of videos, word processing, creating graphs, multimedia presentations, and more .. E.g. last week Multimedia presentations to combine pictures, narration and captions, e.g. Movie Maker ;

Example schemes of work Wokingham LEA – see overview on Moodle Also see ‘100 Computing Lessons for the 2014 Curriculum’ – in library and on reading list

Using and creating graphs KS1

E.g. 2Simple Infant Video Toolkit 2Count 2Graph

Key point: Make graphs cross-curricular and/or part of everyday routines Number of packed lunches, school dinners that day; Science – no. and type of different minibeasts found; Geography – busiest road, types of local shops. etc. …… to help answer real questions (not just to create a graph for no real purpose).

Pros/cons of computer-generated graph?

Pros/cons of computer generated graph? “Computer graphs enable children to focus on the manipulation and interpretation of data rather than on the construction of the graph itself” and one can “speedily enter and store data which can be shown graphically, often in a variety of forms” (Simpson, et al 2011) Can develop “children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of data handling independently of the motor skills needed for hand-drawing of graphs” (Turvey, et al 2014)

Key features of ICT Multi-modality/multimedia - Text, sound, images, animations can be easily combined. Provisionality – Work can be changed/improved/edited when using a computer so there is no pressure to get things right the first time and work can be polished

Key features of ICT Interactivity – Children can follow lines of enquiry, or make attempts and get quick responses. Automation – ICT can perform functions automatically

E-safety See Smartie the Penguin resources and class video Also see resources and SOL task on Moodle sessions page
