Eating Disorder Definition: A mental disorder that reveals itself through abnormal behaviors related to food (emotions, thoughts, attitudes) Causes: media, teasing, personal issues, desire to please others, low self-esteem, anxiety, family issues, abuse, need for control

Anorexia Nervosa Definition: not eating enough food to maintain a healthy body weight Symptoms: Extremely thin yet think they are fat Extreme weight loss Slower heart and breathing rates Dry skin Lowered body temperature Growth of fine body hair Loss of menstrual periods (women)

Anorexia Nervosa (cont.) Health Risks: Can starve to death Lack of minerals cause heart to stop suddenly (leading to death) Treatment: Usually deny they have a problem Hospitalization – doctors work to stop weight loss/change eating habits while mental health experts work on emotional problems

Bulimia Definition: uncontrolled eating binges followed by purging, or removing the food from their body (vomiting or laxatives) Binge to feel better emotionally Purge to avoid weight gain Symptoms: Most people maintain a weight within a normal range Suffer from: dehydration, kidney damage, lack of necessary vitamins/minerals Stomach acid irritates throat and erodes tooth enamel (leading to cavities, etc…)

Bulimia (cont.) Signs: Health Risks: Treatment: Unable to control eating binges Eating too much food too quickly Eating in private Bathroom visits right after eating Hoarding or storing food Health Risks: Can become depressed Have suicidal thoughts Death Treatment: Seek medical help

Binge Eating Definition: regularly have an uncontrollable urge to eat large amounts of food (don’t usually purge) Health Risks: Excessive weight gain Unhealthy dieting (yo-yo) Greater risk for diabetes, high blood pressure

Binge Eating (cont.) Causes Treatment Food provides a temporary relief/numb out feelings of sadness, anger, stress, etc… Treatment Learn how to control eating: eat slowly and deliberately Address underlying emotional problems

Exercise Bulimia Definition: using exercise to purge, or compensate for eating binges (or just regular eating) *Hard to diagnose* Symptoms Missing work, parties, appointments in order to workout Working out with an injury or while sick Becoming seriously depressed if you can’t get a workout in Working out for hours at a time each day Not taking rest or recovery days
