GTP Training Thursday, 20 September 2018 jonathan peel SGS 2011

What is a mentor for? Always a moot point. Friend, ally, supporter, critic, gadfly, guide, teacher, supporter…. All of these. jonathan peel SGS 2011

What does a mentor do? Assimilation, preparation, consolidation. What are your biggest fears about entering teaching? What areas of Subject Knowledge do you worry about? Stage 1 will involve an audit of knowledge and assimilation process jonathan peel SGS 2011

Stage 2 Weekly meetings of 1 hour, fixed in the timetable and always rescheduled if missed by either party. Clear development plan Training by discussion and critical reflection Helping to arrange observations and to point out useful courses Development of the Progress Review Form as you move towards assessments. Comments on your reflective blog/journal. jonathan peel SGS 2011

What mentors don’t do! Hold your hand 24 hours a day. Prepare your folders for you. Leave you floundering if difficulties arise. Show a psychic awareness of your situation at all times. Deliver false affirmation. jonathan peel SGS 2011

You: Reflection in a blog or paper journal starts this week. Set up a blog – google blogger or similar. Begin to outline your thoughts on a regular basis – once a week at least. Consider the value of reflection to your own development and to the creation of evidence in the folders… Read around the subject. Much is based on SK4T – consider not just what you know, but how you might impart it. Paedagogical approaches. jonathan peel SGS 2011
