Presentation Mastery Draft a Compelling Message As you know there are three major principles for Presentation Mastery, and one of the three is to Influence with your message. So today’s workshop is going to focus on how you pull your content together and create that compelling message. Draft a Compelling Message Speaking Group Workshop # 12

Brookton International Andrew Ann Marie Lauren In our previous workshop we met the HR team at Brookton International Andrew Ann Marie Lauren

Introducing new onboarding program to company managers They were working on a presentation to introduce a new onboarding program to all company managers. Introducing new onboarding program to company managers

In order to develop their presentation they are applying the six steps outlined in your Presentation Mastery guide.

Our workshop topic last time discussed step number one, the importance of developing your presentation foundation.

Identify Your Purpose Analyze Your Audience Gather Content The outcome of our work was the creation of a key message – which we will be applying today. Develop Key Message

Now we move to step number two, draft a compelling message that influences your audience’s thinking or behavior.

Impact Presentation Structure Five questions your audience is asking themselves Key Message Opener Purpose Body Close Why is this interesting or relevant? What does this mean to us? Why are we here? What do we need to know? What do you want us to do/remember? To draft this compelling message we use the Impact Presentation template. This template provides the five questions most audience members are asking themselves as you move through your presentation. Let’s see how the Brookton team applied this template as we go through the five questions together.

Impact Presentation Structure Key Message Opener Purpose Body Close Why is this interesting or relevant? What does this mean to us? Why are we here? What do we need to know? What do you want us to do/remember? The first question your audience is asking themselves is, “Why is this presentation interesting or relevant to me?” Our job is to pull our audience in and answer this.

22 Ideas for an Opener Something about yourself History of place/event Rap, music or lyrics Current event as related to talk Letter, poem, article or book Illustration, skit or “Imagine in..” Question Startling statement/statistic Relevant humor Metaphor / analogy Audience challenge Demonstration News headline This day in history Video clip Quote Story Visual aid – prop Comparison Definition Exercise / game Here are 22 ideas for an opener. As you can see there are a lot of ways you can pull your audience in. You can find these in your Presentation Mastery Guide.

Andrew opens the presentation with this slide Andrew opens the presentation with this slide. He shares two startling statistics from the Electronic Business Unit. 16% of new employees leave after less than two years. The average cost for each employee is $100,000 each.

Impact Presentation Structure Key Message Opener Purpose Body Close Why is this interesting or relevant? What does this mean to us? Why are we here? What do we need to know? What do you want us to do/remember? Next we move on to our key message that answers – “What does this topic today mean to me?”

After those startling statistics, Andrew now moves on the key message and his bottom line: The Company Best Start Onboarding program maximizes our investment in new hires. And you’ll notice he also has a sub heading benefit: and can significantly reduce employee turnover.

Impact Presentation Structure Key Message Opener Purpose Body Close Why is this interesting or relevant? What does this mean to us? Why are we here? What do we need to know? What do you want us to do/remember? Next our audience of company managers is thinking – so why exactly are we here for this presentation?

My purpose today is to share our new Onboarding program and to show you the exciting ways you can be involved and help make it a success. Here’s where Andrew would step in and say to the audience, “ My purpose today is to share our new Onboarding program and show you the exciting ways you can be involved and help make it a success.” Your purpose can be shared verbally or with an agenda slide. But remember, if you do have an agenda slide – don’t get caught reading or summarizing what you will be covering – this is an energy killer! Just use the agenda slide as a quick reference.

Impact Presentation Structure Key Message Opener Purpose Body Close Why is this interesting or relevant? What does this mean to us? Why are we here? What do we need to know? What do you want us to do/remember? We can now move on to the body of the presentation. Here’s where you need to sort out what the audience needs to know. Most of your content you will find…

Onboarding All Levels 4 - Integrate 5 - Launch 3 - Familiarize 1 - Prepare 2 - Introduce 3 - Familiarize 4 - Integrate 5 - Launch New Hires All Levels Transfers Stages Who gets it Onboarding Value of it Schedule Components On the mind map you created in step # 1. Tools Resources Support

How do you structure the body of your content? The biggest challenge most of us face is, “How do we structure the body of our content” so that it meets our objectives?

One of the resources we have available to you is the is 12 page guide for how to structure elements of your talk based on your presentation purpose. Trainer – show printed copy.

Available with online workshop One section you will definitely want to review is the section on Influencing. It includes nine suggestions for how to influence your audience with any presentation CLICK This tool will be available for download with your online version of today’s workshop. Influencing

Who What Where When Why How For the Brookton Presentation we used the 6Ws approach for the body

What is the best way to organize my content? I am often asked what is the best way to organize myself to pull this together. Here three ways to do this.

1. Use Post-it-Notes to Organize What are Components? Who is Onboarded? When Does It Start? New Hires People Jan 1 Use post-it-notes to organize your ideas. Transfers Tools Training

2. Develop a Storyline Opener Key Message Body Close Stats for Electronics Business Unit Cost to company of problem Turnover drops to 6% Testimonial of a successfully launched employee On boarding Maximizes our Investment in New Hires Why – job satisfaction more productive lower turnover more engaged What: Responsibilities Mentor Guide Hiring Manager Who – Participates Program Partners What - Components Tools Kit Guide 60 Day Check-in Training Co orientation Div. orientation Job Aides People HR Hiring Manager Mentor Meet & Greet Or you can map out a storyline like you see here. When – Launches first of the year What - Stages Prepare Introduce Familiarize Integrate Launch How: Measure Turnover by BU

3. Create a Storyboard Or lastly, using PowerPoint develop a storyboard. If it is a brand new presentation the storyboard just has topics entered to get a sense of the overall flow.

3. Create a Storyboard If you have an existing presentation you are updating – you can then add/edit with major notes on each slide so you can see how you are organizing it from a high level.

Impact Presentation Structure Key Message Opener Purpose Body Close Why is this interesting or relevant? What does this mean to us? Why are we here? What do we need to know? What do you want us to do/remember? The last question you need to answer to close your presentation is, what do we want our audience to do or remember?

Your Close Reinforce key message Summarize major points Tell a story Appeal to a nobler motive Refer back to your opener Challenge to act or be committed Restate key benefits Give motivating statement Share a quote Dramatize the big idea Make direct appeal Look ahead – visualize Ask rhetorical question Here are 13 ideas for your close. These are also listed in your Presentation Mastery Guide

Andrew ends the presentation by wrapping back to the key message and showing an employee testimonial that reinforced the benefit of a great onboarding program.

Here’s the final Brookton International Slide Deck with all the content pulled together.
