Chemistry The study of matter

Why study Chemistry in Bio? Living things are made of matter Carbon (C) Hydrogen (H) Nitrogen (N) Oxygen (O) Phosphorus (P) Sulfur (S) Metabolism = chemical reactions

Atoms Building blocks of matter 3 parts: Protons (+) Neutrons (no charge) Electrons (-) Protons = electrons, therefore atoms have no charge

Elements Simple substances composed of only 1 kind of atom Represented by symbols Arranged in a Periodic table

Isotopes Atoms with same # protons, different # neutrons Carbon-12 and Carbon-14 Some isotopes are radioactive Useful in medicine C-14 used to date fossils

Electron shell diagrams: Help us understand how atoms will react Electrons determine reactivity Outer e- (valence) are only ones able to interact

How do I diagram?? Hydrogen Lithium Magnesium

Compounds Substance formed by a chemical reaction of two or more elements in definite proportions Represented by chemical formula Examples: H2O NaCl CO2
