The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping The 7 Steps Are: Tentatively Title the Lesson Rough out the Learning Objectives Define the APPOs Define the DEMOs Define the INFOs Define the OPEN Adds Define the CLOSE Adds 1 2 6 5 Then Recycle through the 7 for Final Clean Up 4 3 7 Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Via a Facilitated Group Process Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Tentatively Title the Lesson 1 2 Give the Lesson a tentative title to be finalized during a 2nd pass at all 7 Steps. This might be the same title as captured on the rough Event Map – which is also cleaned-up after all Lesson Mapping and Instructional Activity Spec’ing is completed. Use the 3 PACT Titling Conventions of: “Overview of:” “(Blank)” “How To:” 6 5 4 3 Using these Sources: Performance Model and K/S Matrices data and the insights/expertise of the Design Team Master Performers and Other SMEs 7 Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Rough Out the Learning Objectives 1 2 Roughly state the Learning Objectives reflecting the Titling Convention chosen as a guide as to the nature of the Lesson and it’s level of Objective: Overview of: XYZ (Blank) XYZ How to: XYZ Use this to remind the Group as to the level of depth: Awareness, Knowledge or Skill that is intended – By Design. 6 5 4 3 Using these Sources: Performance Model and K/S Matrices data and the insights/expertise of the Design Team Master Performers and Other SMEs 7 Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Define the APPOs 1 Using the “Cues” of the Title and Learning Objectives determine whether or not this Lesson will include APPOs If so: discuss number of APPOs and if they would address different aspect of authentic Performance - and/or increasing difficulty. Discuss the concept of the “APPO from Hades” if authentic Performance back on the job requires addressing those situations routinely. Map According the number of APPOs NOT ALL LESSONS INCLUDE APPOs 2 6 5 4 3 Using these Sources: Performance Model and K/S Matrices data and the insights/expertise of the Design Team Master Performers and Other SMEs 7 Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Define the DEMOs 1 2 Now that the number and nature of the APPOs are determined – discuss whether or not a “DEMO-set” is desirable for the Target Audiences in advance (or not) of doing the APPOs. Define the “DEMO-set” to include (or not) a Regular Speed DEMO and/or a Slow-Motion DEMO and/or a Start-Stop Commentary DEMO – or all 3 to help the Learner “see” the terminal performance NOT ALL LESSONS INCLUDE DEMOs 6 5 4 3 Using these Sources: Performance Model and K/S Matrices data and the insights/expertise of the Design Team Master Performers and Other SMEs 7 Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Define the INFOs 1 2 Take the K/S Matrices Item data linked to the relevant AoP and decide which fit into this Lesson. Add any missing K/S Items if needed If the K/Ss Item(s) enable several AoPs discuss whether they should exist within another Lesson all to themselves that would then precede this Lesson – or if there should be “redundancy by design” or “refresher by design” Sequence those K/S Items in this Lesson in a logical order 6 5 4 3 Using these Sources: Performance Model and K/S Matrices data and the insights/expertise of the Design Team Master Performers and Other SMEs 7 Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Define the OPEN Adds 1 2 Give the standard Lesson OPEN outline, determine if there should be specific content added to it for this lesson – besides what the Developer would normally do – and specify what those adds are 6 5 4 3 Using these Sources: Performance Model and K/S Matrices data and the insights/expertise of the Design Team Master Performers and Other SMEs 7 Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Define the CLOSE Adds 1 2 Give the standard Lesson CLOSE outline, determine if there should be specific content added to it for this lesson – besides what the Developer would normally do – and specify what those adds are 6 5 4 3 Using these Sources: Performance Model and K/S Matrices data and the insights/expertise of the Design Team Master Performers and Other SMEs 7 Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Macro Steps Before Lesson Mapping Analysis/Design Steps 1 Analysis of the Target Audience Performance Analysis (including Typical Gaps & Causes) data has been captured in the Performance Models Enabling K/Ss are derived from the Performance Model data Existing T&D is Assessed for use “As Is” or “After Modification” A Development Path has been designed The Event that contains this Lesson has been Mapped Standard Formats, Titling Conventions, Event/Lesson “OPENs” and “CLOSEs” have been outlined 2 6 5 4 3 Administrative Steps 7 Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Micro Steps After Lesson Mapping Complete the Instructional Activity Specification (Activity Spec) for each INFO, DEMO, APPO and the OPEN and CLOSE for each Lesson Map 1 2 6 5 Note: These Activity Specs would likely be roughed out during the discussions and decisions made while Lesson Mapping – often by a 2nd Designer acting as an Assistant – or by the Lone Designer. 4 3 7 Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Example 1 - Lesson Map 5 INFO Instructional Activities and 1 APPO Instructional Activity. No DEMOs. Note: this example was from my first attempt to use what soon became Lesson Mapping – from an Illinois Bell project in 1991 on Labor Relations for 1st Line Supervisors. The PACT format and language were soon changed after this first project – when the term “Specs” referred to “Tables of Data” and “Maps” referred to a picture of the Flow of Data.” Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz

The 7 Steps of Lesson Mapping Example 2 - Lesson Map 2 INFO Instructional Activities and 1 DEMO Instructional Activity and 3 APPO Instructional Activities. Note: this example shows a layering – where the 1st INFO set up 1 DEMO leading to 2 APPOs where the 2nd was a more difficult APPO. Then an additional INFO was followed by another APPO. Guy W. Wallace Pursuing Performance EPPIC Inc. www.eppic.biz
