Welcome to ILITE Robotics! Interest Meeting | October 15, 2015

What is FRC? FIRST Robotics Challenge FIRST Yearly competitions revolving around the engineering of 6ft tall robots FIRST Mission: “To inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.”

Member Responsibilities Members will be required to participate in various ILITE Community Events Members must also attend mandatory events Robotics is intensely time-consuming. Members are nevertheless required to attend the entirety of meetings Members are expected to maintain high grades (‘A’s and ‘B’s) as well as being academically honest Teddy - So.. throughout the year, ILITE does a variety of outreach events. These are ultimately to spread interest in STEM and get people to know more about our team. And as such, members will be required to participate. There are also events that members will be required to attend. This includes IROC, FRC Kickoff, ILITE STEM camps… You can find the entire list on the Member Handbook, which is on our kickass website. Robotics can be very time-consuming, especially at peak points in the year, but members are still responsible for attending the meetings for their entirety. While I know how much all new members are going to want to just throw themselves into Robotics and do nothing else for school, we still require you guys to have high grades. You may be suspended from the team until your grades go back up, if they were to fall. STEM Camp: 2 Week summer camp revolving around STEM. STEM Expo: Family friendly event which exposes the community to STEM with the help of local businesses and colleges.

Member Responsibilities Members are expected to behave themselves at competition, community, events, and meetings New members are required to submit a payment of $250, which can be reduced to $150 through parent volunteering Travel will not be fully funded by the team; students will be required to cover travel costs Teddy - Alright, so something that we don’t have much trouble with, but is nevertheless important, is behavior of members. Basically, assume PWCS is listening in on everything you say while at competition, community events, and meetings. Present yourself as you would like ILITE to be presented. So, like… don’t be an idiot. New members are required to submit a payment of $250, which can be reduced through parent volunteering. The money from this goes directly towards team registration fees, supplies, and parts. Finally, travel, which we do a good amount of, will not be covered by the team. And as such, you’ll be required to cover your own expenses.

Sponsorship Roles: Raise money for the team Find new fundraisers and make campaigns Communicate to sponsors (write letters, go to local businesses, etc.) Find new companies and businesses to support us General “Business” roles during competition season

Sponsorship Expected Skill Set: What you can learn: Presentation skills (giving them AND making them) Have good fundraising ideas in mind If possible, have or have the ability to make connections Public Speaking and generally efficient speaking skills Ability to write professionally (Emails, letters, etc.) What you can learn: Improve on said skills

Graphic Design Roles: Expected Skill Set: Design posters, flyers, logos, signs, infographics etc. Photography, videography, and editing Creating the image and visual identity of the team Expected Skill Set: General knowledge of design, an eye for good layout & composition Organizational skills & great work ethic Having been or is in an IT Graphic Design course Get examples ready

Graphic Design What you can learn : Adept graphic design skills and knowledge Ability to implement design fundamentals Establish visual flow Semi-professional graphic design experience Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator Get examples ready

Photography/Videography Team Roles: Sub-team of Graphic Design Team Documentation: Take all photos & videos for the team Event photography Video recaps/Vlogs Work with Graphics Photo/video editing - Contribute to the image and visual identity of entire team

Photography/Videography Team Expected Skill Set: Having a good eye for picture-perfect moments, create perspective Organization skills and punctuality Teamwork skills and good work ethic Highly recommended Adobe Photoshop experience Video editing experience Have taken any IT Photography/Graphic Design course Knowledge/experience in working a digital single-lens reflex camera

Photography/Videography Team What you can learn: Master the use of a digital camera, Adobe Photoshop, and video editing Semi-professional experience as a photographer/videographer

Electronics Expected Skill Set: Roles: Basic concepts of electronics (“Red is positive, Black is negative”, circuits, etc.) Open mind to learn new concepts Roles: Wiring Put components in electronics board We make it possible for code to run on the robot *ask Drake to add Things going to be learned how pneumatics works and how the components on the robot works together and what is electronics.

Build Who we are and what we do: designing, prototyping, manufacturing, and assembling the robot put ideas together to form a machine that performs to the needs of the competition use the materials and time we have to create a functioning robot in 6 weeks emphasize on safety

Build Expected Skill Set: What you can learn: Knowledge of basic gear types, ratios, and systems Basic tool usage and tool safety knowledge Knowledge of common hardware Basic knowledge of motors and shop safety What you can learn: How to use heavy machinery How to use complex workshop tools Blueprinting and outlining of robot components Basic CAD-ing of robot components

Build: CAD & 3D Printing Expected Skill Set: How to use AutoDesk programs Math (at least Geometry) Ability to create simple models Creativity Working under pressure

Build: CAD & 3D Printing Roles & What we do: What you can learn Allows build team to create their own parts (CAD) Can choose what material to use and can make parts fit any piece (3-D Printing) What you can learn Create objects Use the mill 3D Print Improve (or learn) skills with OpenSCAD

Programming Expected Skill Set: Basic Java (Robot) Have at least gone through the first year computer science course, Advance Computer Math, OR a background in programming in Java (Robot) Knowledge of HTML and CSS (Web)

Programming: The Robot What you can learn: Data structures Communication between software and hardware Roles and Tasks: Program Robot Code - Actual code that operates robot - Controls motors, pneumatics, sensors Code for Vision - Provides video feed for drivers Code for GUI (Graphical User Interface) - Provide GUI for drivers - Enhances the feed from vision

Programming: Web Roles and Tasks: What you can learn: Creating & updating the website -Work with Business Team to keep information on website up- to-date and work on design - Transitioning from WordPress to HTML What you can learn: HTML CSS
