How does Shakespeare present Romeo’s feelings

‘Quotes are your best friend’ task I am [ perform quote] I am spoken by…. In Act ……. I show that Romeo …………………. For A02 you could talk about For A03 you could talk about

Tricking Romeo’s feelings across the play Towards Rosaline – he is a Petrarchan lover, in love with love itself. Exaggerated language conveys his immaturity and self-indulgent suffering as he experiences unrequited love Towards Juliet – he is adoring/ idolatrous / bewitched and reckless He is magnanimous ( generous/forgiving) towards Tybalt in 3.1 but then replaces peace with hatred as he fulfils the 17th century masculine ideal He is regretful in hurting Juliet, he resents society’s laws and fate’s cruelty He is determined to reunite with Juliet in death and believes his love transcends this world – suicide is a positive and loving action

Big ideas – Shakespeare’ intentions 1. Young love is not a good reason to kill yourself. In the play what we largely see is just infatuation. 2. Romantic love is to be avoided – stick to marrying for money and status. 3. Love is a more dignified emotion than duty and obligation. Shakespeare suggests love is better than the other options for human relationships ( brotherhood / family loyalty). The foil between Juliet & Tybalt shows this. 4. Love leads to bad decision making and impetuous behaviour. Shakespeare is presenting us with a criticism of romantic love. The foreshadowing of death helps to show this. And it is a tragedy.

Intro Romeo is also shown as impulsive and reckless in his feelings for Juliet and as the Friar advises ‘these violent delights have violent ends are ’. In this scene we see Romeo’s violent emotions as he responds to his banishment - for him, separation from Juliet is as good as being dead. Act 3, the climax, is a turning point in this tragedy – by choosing revenge and hate over love for Juliet Romeo has set in motion his own tragedy.
