Introduction to the Old Testament Make-Up, books, trustworthiness

What is a MetaNarrative? Metanarrative – Overarching, all-embracing story of mankind in which all more particular narratives fit. Biblical metanarrative – Creation-Fall-Redemption- New Creation is the all-embracing metanarrative for the biblical story

MetaNarrative The main character of the whole Bible is Jesus. Jesus is foreshadowed in the Old Testament, who comes in the New Testament. The Bible is all about Jesus and His plan to redeem mankind from their sin.

Jesus and the Old Testament Jesus offers hope to Old Testament people, and fulfills God’s promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jesus upheld the authority of the Old Testament Matthew 5:17-20; Luke 24:27 Jesus affirmed the Old Testament was pointing to Him. To neglect the study of the Old Testament for study of the New will only give half of the story.

Jesus and the Old Testament Jesus succeeds where Adam does not. Jesus redeems His people from the slavery of sin Jesus is the Passover Lamb whose blood stops the wrath of God from coming on his people. Jesus is the tabernacle who dwells amongst his people

Jesus and the Old Testament Jesus is the better Israel, where Israel failed, Christ succeed. Jesus is the initiator of the New Covenant. Jesus validates the Old Testament by fulfilling it.

Why study the Old Testament? 4 Reasons: 1. Jesus authenticates the Old Testament. 2. The Old Testament is rich with theology about God and his people 3. Because Paul and Peter saw the Old Testament as inspired by the Holy Spirit. 4. So that the church can have a better understanding of the nature of God and how they are united in Christ.
