What are SATS? Formal assessment of children’s attainment at the end of Key Stage 2 Maths, English (Reading, Punctuation and Grammar) Writing and Science All children ‘working towards the expected national standard’ for Y6 are entered for the SATS

End of Key Stage 2 Assessment Teacher Assessment is ongoing throughout school. In Year 6, this Teacher Assessment is reported alongside the children’s SATs results. This is also reported to the Local Education Authority and feeder schools. Children sit tests in May in English, Maths (Science) to provide a snapshot of children’s attainment. Papers sent away for external marking Tests inform Government, parents and teachers if children have attained the national standard

The English Test Reading TEST (Monday) Children given a booklet to read (3 or 4 unrelated texts – fiction and non fiction) Texts become increasingly challenging Comprehension based on the texts 1 hour to be used as children choose (50 marks)

SPAG (Tuesday) Grammar and Punctuation Test (50 marks) Children will be tested on their understanding of using and applying grammatical terms and punctuation. (45 minutes) Spelling Test (20 marks) Tested on words Year 6 children should know how to spell, starting easier and gets progressively harder. (20 minutes) Marks are combined together.

The Maths Test (Wednesday and Thursday Test 1 Arithmetic (30 minutes) 40 marks Test 2 Reasoning (40 minutes) 35 marks Thursday Test 3 Reasoning (40 minutes) 35 marks Test scores will be combined /120 All children can ask for some questions to be read to them (Part 2 and 3)

Writing Teacher assessment (no test) based on: Writing across a range of genres and subjects throughout the term in normal classroom conditions *To reach the expected standard in writing children should be able to write for sustained periods of time, be good spellers and their handwriting should be in a joined, legible, style.

Results (Confidential) On publication of the test results in July Each pupil receives: a raw score (number of raw marks awarded); a scaled score in each tested subject; confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard a child awarded a scaled score of 100 is judged to have met the ‘national standard’ in the area judged by the test; a child awarded a scaled score of more than 100 is judged to have exceeded the national standard and demonstrated a higher than expected knowledge of the curriculum for their age; a child awarded a scaled score of less than 100 is judged to have not yet met the national standard and performed below the expectation for their age. Teacher assessment to say if we think your child has met the required standard and has not met the national standard

What we’ll do Encourage children to do their best! Prepare for the tests through practise papers Give children a target to achieve, then better - as a guide to what we think they can achieve Review answers and techniques with the children Allow the children to complete past papers Send past papers for homework

What else will we do? Give some children targeted support Inform you of your child’s progress and whether we expect them to attain the national standard at the next parents evening in March.

What can you do? Encourage your children to always do their best! Let us know if children seem worried or stressed. Make sure they do their homework in the time frame recommended for papers (or in 2 sittings) and hand it in on time! Friday – Maths paper to be completed and returned the following Friday Monday – Comprehension or SPAG paper to be returned the following Monday All homework will be marked by the children to help them learn from any mistakes they make.

Don’t argue about the answers Don’t argue about the answers! If they can’t explain how they should do it – leave it! (E.g. Multiplication and division strategies) Continue to test children on times tables Talk to your child about news reports and things that interest you both to increase their vocabulary Encourage reading for sustained periods Ask them questions about what they are reading

What else can you do? Encourage children to remain focused on school work and well behaved in class. Do they continually manage 25-30 minutes of Golden Time per week? If not - why not? Make sure children are going to bed early!
