Presentation Objective To introduce and/or expand on class’ knowledge of open differentials Outline of presentation
What is a Differential? Key component of car Last line of control from the gas pedal to the wheels Controls the speed of wheels Transmits power from engine to wheels
How it works? 3 primary tasks Path of power = engine > drive shaft > input pinion > ring gear > axle shaft > wheels Straight motion = gears within cage DO NOT rotate Turning = gears within cage ROTATE
When and where are they needed? Must be on all cars as they provide control Front wheel drive = front axle shaft Rear wheel drive = rear axle shaft All wheel drive = one on each axle shaft and one on the center drive shaft
Conclusion Integral part of a car Located in all cars 3 primary tasks
