Agenda Why Improve efficiency Reduce costs Improve the patient experience How Energy to Care Sustainability Roadmap for Hospitals What Overcoming barriers and inertia Tools and resources Healthcare must strive to provide the highest quality, cost effective patient care. In order to do this, and thrive in the current health care environment, hospitals and health systems must be diligent in reducing costs.
Benefits of Efficiency in Health Care Energy costs more than 50% of facility budget Energy cost inflation…off the bottom line! Patients and staff take notice Differentiate your hospital or system Inflation less than 2% while utilities escalation is closer to 4% Cost savings (bottom line) is equivalent to 20X top line revenue Average utility escalation between 3-5%. For every $1M of spend, energy escalation of ~$40,000 per year
Complimentary Programs The two are complimentary sites and work together to provide the tools you need to get the job done The Sustainability Roadmap is a comprehensive guide to making hospitals more efficient and includes step-by-step instructions on efficiency projects. The Energy to Care program is specifically focused on measuring and tracking performance around energy Hospitals can use both programs to incorporate a comprehensive efficiency strategy to provide value and support patient care.
Energy to Care and the Sustainability Roadmap: Facility Engineer Share data with Energy to Care Portfolio Manager Access tools Dashboard implement, report Improve, get recognition Awards Engage, celebrate Gather and input data Energy to Care and the Sustainability Roadmap: Supporting your energy-reduction efforts Energy to Care and the Sustainability Roadmap are tools to help hospitals make continuous energy efficiency and sustainability improvements. They are not meant to be one time actions, but a continuous cycle.
What is Energy to Care? Complimentary program, sponsored by Johnson Controls, to help health care facilities monitor and reduce energy consumption National awards program Energy dashboard, system challenges, and web tools Energy data remains confidential Goal: every inpatient and outpatient facility in Energy to Care Provide the tools to track/save energy in every hospitals hands Celebrate successes with awards program Help ASHE better understand energy use in health care and provide better information back to its members. Program for inpatient and outpatient facilities Program designed with an understanding of the challenges and barriers health care faces: Limited operating budget Facilities group with no free time to learn another program Facilities team that must proficient at a variety of tasks and skills…cannot take on another complex program
Energy to Care Participation Rates We are reaching the tipping point. For a long period of time, participation rates have been slowly climbing. As the program has evolved, we have now seen rapid growth. Participating hospitals are no longer early adopters but now part of the movement around energy efficiency, cost reductions, and celebrating continuous improvement. 6
Geographic Distribution We are reaching the tipping point. For a long period of time, participation rates have been slowly climbing. As the program has evolved, we have now seen rapid growth. Participating hospitals are no longer early adopters but now part of the movement around energy efficiency, cost reductions, and celebrating continuous improvement.
Energy Savings Since 2009, hospitals and health care facilities participating in ASHE's Energy to Care program have tracked more than $67 million in energy savings!
Natural Gas vs. Outside Air Temperature TREND ANALYSIS Able to view energy consumption over time and against variables such as weather. Using this feature as a tool, you can: Identify and prioritize opportunities to increase building performance, Justify resource allocation FACILITY COMPARISONS Compare facilities EUI side-by-side to see (Energy Use Intensity – Kbtu / SF Filter by building type This will allow you to answer questions like: What’s the best investment? What system will be the most sustainable and permit the lowest operating costs? Facility Comparisons

Health System Competitions Challenges can tap into the power of friendly competition to motivate even greater energy savings. Under the Occupant Engagement feature, you will be able to set up competitions within your health care system or between individual hospitals. This will allow you to: -Compare your facility to your peers -Track performance over time -Set & manage goals -developing “challenges” for Hosp. across systems and geography
Energy to Care Awards: New! Given to hospitals that reduce EUI by 10% from prior year baseline Application Deadline: April 1, 2016 Energy Champion Given to a single facility leading the way in energy efficiency Application Deadline: April 1, 2016 The new Energy Champion Award will be given to a single facility for leading the way in energy efficiency. Energy to Care Awards will continue to be awarded to hospitals that reduce energy use by 10 percent. Some points to note as background about these awards: Energy to Care: This award requires a peer review of basic facility data. Once the peer review is completed, the facility can use the online application process to submit their data. Any facility that has reduced EUI by 10 percent over the past year will receive an award. Energy Champion: This online application is more involved than the Energy to Care. Instead of a peer review, this application requires a data review from a licensed professional engineer (PE). Once the PE review is completed, the facility can use the online application process to submit data. The application also requires four short essay questions explaining how the facility is leading the way in energy efficiency. Only one facility will be awarded the Energy Champion award each year. Winners of both types of awards will be recognized at the ASHE Annual Conference. www.energytocare.com/awards For questions, contact helpdesk@energytocare.com
