What is QuarkNet? Partners high school teachers with particle physicists who act as mentors. Teachers get summer research experience. Centers are established where additional teachers, students and physicists are included in the program. Program is funded by US NSF/MPS, NSF/ESIE and DOE Preliminary program 1998; Full program 1999 + Up to 60 centers are planned over a 5-year period. The proponents for this idea and project: M. Bardeen (Fermilab Education Office) R. M. Barnett (LBNL, Atlas Education Coordinator) O. Keith Baker (Hampton Univ) R. Ruchti (Notre Dame, USCMS Education Coordinator) R. Ruchti, Notre Dame QuarkNet and the Education/Outreach Effort 7th ICATPP, Villa Olmo, Como, Italy, 15-19.10.2001

Motivation Provide coherence to a national program of education and outreach. Strength in numbers and better planning. Affiliation with major projects. Provide resources and contacts over a sustained period of time. Continuity over several years for impact and evaluation. Attract teachers, students and the public to the excitement of physics at the energy frontier. Building a community with scientific literacy and interest. Sustaining power. For successful US federal funding for a project, an education and outreach component is required. A variety of strategies are required to accomplish a successful program. R. QuarkNet Outreach Activities Indiana University A university professor, five high school physics teachers and 22 high school students worked for a week: building, programming and testing cosmic ray telescope components. They also produced the documentation and electronics necessary so teachers and students can build similar telescopes when they return to their schools. Student group under direction of Prof. Rick Van Kooten R. Ruchti, Notre Dame QuarkNet and the Education/Outreach Effort 7th ICATPP, Villa Olmo, Como, Italy, 15-19.10.2001

Summary QuarkNet, RET, REU, REHSS, + other initiatives serve to: Advance scientific literacy and culture in society. Provide a research emersion experience for teachers and students. Take a long term focus on societal needs as well as experimental needs. Large scale physics and technical projects are a natural way to further these aims. We are definitely underway toward an exciting future of physics and associated educational opportunities. R.
