Blackmer Vane vs. Internal Gear

Blackmer Vane vs. Internal Gear Advantages and disadvantages of each design Key features and benefits of vane pumps Key issues to be aware of how to bring more value to your customer

Internal Gear Pump Advantages and Disadvantages* only two moving parts one stuffing box operates in either direction non-pulsating flow ideal for viscous fluids easy to maintain Disadvantages medium speed and pressure bearing in pumpage overhung load on shaft bearing *NOTE: from Viking’s Web and Bulletin AD-12

Blackmer Vane Pump Advantages and Disadvantages* thin fluids sometimes preferred for solvents and gases can run dry for short periods develops good vacuum one stuffing box (some models) Disadvantages not suitable for high viscosity two stuffing boxes (some models) not good with abrasives *NOTE: from Viking’s Web and Bulletin AD-12

Internal Gear Pump Disadvantages Overhung (cantilevered) Load forces attempt to rotate drive shaft at the fulcrum - bearing drive shaft and idler pin are at different center lines gears because of forces and different centerlines of gears - do not “mesh” results - heavy load on idler pin and bearing (note: this bearing is always in the pumpage) *NOTE: from Viking’s Web and Bulletin AD-12

Internal Gear Pump Disadvantages Bearing in Pumpage ask if there is a pump problem, if the answer is no, then ask if there is “idler pin wear” the heavy loads always create this problem and wear this wear pattern on the pin will also mean that the pump has heavy wear in the head, casing, drive gear and idler gear … basically the pump is “easy to maintain” because its disposable *NOTE: from Viking’s Web and Bulletin AD-12

Addressing the Disadvantages of Internal Gear Pump Cantilevered load can be corrected by symmetrical bearings ... … the bearings can be removed from the the pumpage by adding seals … the solution is a Blackmer!

Blackmer Vane Pump Advantages Thin Fluids ... Preferred for solvents … Can run dry … Develops good vacuum ... Blackmer has a strong awareness and preference in applications with thin products: solvents fuel oils, diesels gases - propane, butane, CO2 and with applications requiring priming, line stripping and dry running: terminals truck and Rail Road car unloading

Vane Pump Advantage Thin Fluids Blackmer vane pumps are more efficient on thin fluids because the design incorporates close tolerances ... and symmetrical loads ... for reliability and preference when handling thin fluids.

Vane Pump Advantage Thin Fluids Additionally, Blackmer vane pumps are more efficient on thin fluids because the design incorporates non-metallic vanes ... actuated by the system pressure (movement initiated by push-rods and augmented by centrifugal force) … the vanes adjust to maintain efficiency and the customers operational requirements over the life of the pump for reliability and preference when handling thin fluids.

Blackmer Vs. VIKING Mechanical Efficiency Comparison at 28 SSU and 75 PSI GPM

Viscous Fluid Handling Blackmer Vane Pump vs Viscous Fluid Handling Blackmer Vane Pump vs. Internal Gear Pump Advantage or Disadvantage?? Lower peripheral speeds (larger drive rotor on gear) … and surface shear (one pump chamber in vane vs. six in this presentation) … allows the vane pump to perform efficiently on viscous fluids. Additionally, Blackmer will maintain that efficiency! 2 4 1

Blackmer Vs. VIKING Mechanical Efficiency Comparison at 750 SSU and 100 PSI GPM

Blackmer Vs. VIKING Mechanical Efficiency Comparison at 25,000 SSU and 100 PSI GPM

Vane Pump Abrasive Handling? Blackmer’s efficiency advantage can, without consideration, become a problem on abrasive fluids … the vanes want to adjust to do 100% … this can greatly accelerate wear. A gear pump will wear in and transfer fluid at low efficiency … this allows it to be more tolerant with abrasives. For success with a vane … care must be taken evaluating the abrasive hardness, fluid medium and a critical evaluation of pump RPM!

Questions and concerns when replacing a gear pump with a vane pump A gear pump may be selected - oversize - in an attempt to prolong service life … a vane pump should be sized to provide the customers requirements (or +10%) … running a pump faster then it needs will accelerate wear. A gear pump may use a variable speed drive to compensate for wear … a vane pump will compensate for wear, by design … variable speed is not required or recommended.

Matching the customers flow and life expectations with pump characteristics 25 GPM and 12 period life expectancy

Matching the customers flow and life expectations with pump characteristics over-sizing the gear pump to wear in

Blackmer Vane Pump Additional Considerations Relief Valve Performance Mag-Drive Comparisons Life Cycle Costs Viking vs. Blackmer model comparison chart Pump Options *NOTE: from Viking’s Web and Bulletin AD-12

Relief Valves Internal relief valves are recommended to protect the pump Blackmer’s unique valve is designed for a “set pressure” relief and does not modulate This allows for a more efficient motor selection

Blackmer vs. Viking Relief Valve’s Performance

Viking Mag-Drive Viking Support Bearing needed to … maximize life at motor speed operation extend seal life Viking Mag-Drive no external support bearing minimal cantilevered control gaskets used to shim and seal head to casing Closer to General Purpose design not Heavy Duty External Bearing Head Seal

Blackmer Mag-coupled Vane Pump Blackmer Advantages Symmetrical Bearing Support Eliminates Cantilevered Loads Minimal Axial Loads Efficient Operation from .7 to 5000 cps Consistent Performance Dry Run capability

Life Cycle Costs Assumptions: capital costs is 10% of total ownership Vane Pump vs. Gear Capital Cost are equal Vane pump is 24% more efficient (on average of 5 models at 3 viscosity's) Average Energy Savings / pump = $900 Energy savings pays for the pump!

Blackmer vane pumps cross- referenced to Viking internal gear pumps

Pump Options Thin Fluids Viscous Fluids Blackmer “X” Series with non-metallic vanes Viking with carbon bushings (non-metallic idler gear on 4195) Viscous Fluids Blackmer metal vanes - EC rotor on HXL Viking EC drive rotor and steel rotor

Life Cycle Cost Advantage’s of Blackmer Vane Pumps Reliability, Maintenance and Energy Advantages on: thin fluids the preferred technology for solvents and gases applications requiring run dry capability applications requiring good vacuum for lift, priming and line stripping Energy advantage on: viscous fluids Blackmer can make your customer more profitable!
