Missional? Worship Social Prayer Fellowship Evangelism Reason Emotion Attraction Soteriological Ecclesiological Eschatological The Kingdom of God

Mission in more than and different from recruitment to our brand of religion; it is alerting people to the universal reign of God. David Bosch The Church is not so much the agent of the mission as the locus of the mission… It is impossible to stress too strongly that the beginning of mission is not an action of ours, but the presence of a new reality, the presence of the Spirit of God in power. Lesslie Newbigin

Missional? Missio Dei… Missional nature of God Missional activity of God Extra-cultural action of God

The church serves the missio Dei in the world… (when) it points to God at work in world history and names him there. World Council of Churches Mission is, primarily and ultimately, the work of the Triune God, Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier for the sake of the world, a ministry in which the church is privileged to participate. David Bosch

Missional? Incarnational… Sent Church Community life Patterned after God

A missional ecclesiology is rooted in Gods character and purpose as a sending or missionary God. Therefore, its starting point is the missional nature of The Trinity. God the Father sent the Son. God the Father and the Son sends the Spirit. God the Father, the Son and the Spirit sends the Church. The church is Gods sent missional people. So just as Jesus was the fullness of God incarnated and embodied in a human being, the missional church follows Jesus model, learning from him how to embody the fullness of God as a new way of being human for the sake of the world. That is its very identity and essence. Jason Zahariades

Mission as witness and a journey within the world, not a judgement made from outside it. Vinay Samuel Journeying out requires the capacity to rise above the anxiety associated with encountering and embracing a potentially overwhelming, outside world. Ann Morisy

Missional? Hospitality… Sacrificial welcome Indigenous spirituality Unconditional commitment

Hospitality can be, and very frequently is Sacrificial. Caring for the stranger can require us to think outside the box or deliberately extend ourselves beyond our normal limits in order to understand how to be present to someone. David Dieter A Missional Community is one where sacrificial hospitality is the norm... i.e. hospitality that extends beyond what is comfortable to the church and does not reinforce cultural stereotyping nor enforce acceptance criteria but sees individuals as children of God regardless of culture, history etc.

Sadhu Sunder Singh [was] asked What have you found in Christianity that you did not have in your old religion? The Sadhu answered, I have Christ. Yes I know, the professor replied, a little impatiently… but what particular principle or doctrine have you found that you did not have before? The Sadhu replied, The particular thing I have found is Christ. E. Stanley Jones

Christians have usually failed to exersise a radical trust in the Holy Spirit and instead have imposed on converts pre- packaged forms of church life and discipleship which have extracted them from their society. David Smith

Missional? Holistic… Shalom Kingdom of God Reconciliation Restoration Reform/Reversal

The general meaning behind the root sh-l-m is of completion and fulfillmentof entering into a state of wholeness and unity, a restored relationship....Shalom, and its related words shalem, shelem and their derivatives, are among the most important theological words in the OT. … Peace, in this case, means much more than mere absence of war. Rather, the root meaning of the verb shalem better expresses the true concept of shalom completeness, wholeness, harmony, fulfillment, are closer to the meaning. Implicit in shalom is the idea of unimpaired relationships with others and fulfillment in one's undertakings. … In nearly two- thirds of its occurrences, shalom describes the state of fulfillment which is the result of God's presence.

A Gospel that conveys the idea that salvation is a subjective experience of isolated individuals is not the Christian gospel… If anyone is in Christ, there and then Gods new world becomes visible, a new creation encompassing heaven and earth is manifest. The church does not exist to promote a private religious experience but to enlist people for the service of the Kingdom of justice and peace. C. Rene Padilla
