Notes Time Vocabulary Expression Example Any mathematical calculation or formula combining numbers and/or variables Expressions may not contain the equal sign (=) or any type of inequality Example 5x + 3 2y + 7x 4

Vocabulary Variable Example A quantity that can change or that may take on different values. Variable also refers to a letter or symbol representing such a quantity. Example X, y, z, t, . . .

Vocabulary Constant Example a term or expression with no variables 2, 6, 12, 311, . . .

Vocabulary Exponent Example The number or letter that is in the upper right corner of another term. How many times a number is multiplied. Example x in the expression ax

Vocabulary Coefficient Example The number multiplied times a product of variables or powers of variables in a term. Example 123 is the coefficient in the term 123x3y

Vocabulary Like term Example Terms which have the same variables and corresponding powers and/or roots. Like terms can be combined using addition and subtraction. Terms that are not like cannot be combined using addition or subtraction. Example 2x and 3x are like terms 5x2y and 8x2y are like terms. 5x2y + 8x2y simplifies to 13x2y 5x2y – 8x2y simplifies to –3x2y
