Rules for Indices 3rd Year Maths

1. Multiplying/Dividing Numbers with Indices 52 x 54 = 56 .........Add the two indices   = 34 .........Subtract the indices

2. Raising the Power of a Number to a Power To raise the power of a number to a power...... (23)4 = 212 = 4096 ...we multiply the powers then work it out!

3. The Power of Zero Any number to the power of 0 is 1 50 = 1 1240 = 1 -160 = 1

Questions to Complete: Page 180: Q1

4. Negative Powers Take an example.... 33 = 3 x 3 x 3 = 27...So we multiply the number by itself three times. For 2-2....its the reverse...so we divide... 2-2 = = Similarly... = 42

Questions to Complete Q3 Q9

5. Fractional Indices Rule: X1/n = 81/3 = = 2 Rule: Xm/n = ( )m 82/3 = ( )2 = (2)2 = 4

6. A Product or a Quotient to a Power Rule: xyn = xn yn Example: (4 x 3)2 = 42 x 32 = 16 x 9 = 144 Rule: ( )n = Example: ( )2 = = = 4

Questions to Complete Q2 – Page 180 Q5 Q8
