What is genetics? GENETICS is the branch of Biology that studies heredity. HEREDITY is… the passing on of characteristics from parents to offspring. Mendelian.
Genetics. Genetics – branch of biology that deals with patterns of inheritance, or heredity. Heredity- biological process by which parents pass on genetic.
Mendelian Genetics. Vocabulary Terms 1.Allele- different forms of a gene 2.Phenotype- observable trait or characteristic 1.I.e. Green eyes, black hair.

GENETICS Introduction. Genetics Study of heredity Gregor Mendel is considered the “father of genetics” Mendel studied the traits of pea plants A trait.
Gregor Mendel Humans have noticed family resemblances for thousands of years. Heredity- the passing of traits from parents to offspring, was used for.

Mendel’s Theory Section 8-2 Ag Biology. Before Mendel’s Experiments People thought that offspring were a blend of the parents characteristics. Example.
Mendel: Fundamentals of Genetics
Genetics.  Mendel  Studied pea plants.  Traits: something passed from parent to child.
Mendelian Genetics The Basics. Gregor Mendel Mendel was an Austrian monk who published his research on the inheritance of pea plant characteristics in.
What laws did Mendel develop? How do genes influence the development of traits?
Principles of Mendelian Genetics B-4.6. Principles of Mendelian Genetics Genetics is the study of patterns of inheritance and variations in organisms.

 Who was Gregor Mendel (biographical information)?  What did he study?  Why did he use pea plants for his research?  What were his results?  What.
Introduction to Mendelian Genetics. Gregor Mendel ( ) Used pea plants to study genetics, heredity and variation. Looked at 7 different traits.

Results Short x Short Tall x Tall Tall x Short Conclusion? F1 offspring #3 X F1 offspring # 3 Tall Tall Conclusion?

Conclusions Every characteristic or trait (e.g. height) is determined by two factors (alleles). There are variations in alleles (e.g. height= tall (T) or short (t)) Genotype: What combination of alleles an individual has (TT, Tt, tt) Homozygous: individual has two of the same alleles (TT, tt) Heterozygous: individuals have two different alleles (Tt)

Phenotype: What the individual physically looks like (determined by genotype) Dominant allele: The allele that shows up physically in the heterozygous form Recessive allele: The allele that is not displayed physically in the heterozygous form

Is Dominant the most common allele in the population?

Genotype Phenotype Homozygous Tall TT Tall Heterozygous Tall Tt Homozygous Short tt Short

Mendel’s Law of Segregation Each allele separates into different gametes during meiosis therefore only one allele is passed down to the offspring T DNA replication meiosis T T t T T t t t t
