Long Term Causes Nationalism- Deep Devotion to One’s Nation Competition and Rivalry developed between European nations for territory and markets (colonies) Many ethnic groups disliked domination by other nations & wanted independence

Long Term Causes Militarism- By the 1890’s European nations had spent millions preparing for war Glorifying Military Power Keeping a large standing army prepared for war Arms race for military technology (who can be bigger, better, faster, & stronger than other nations)

Long Term Causes Imperialism- European competition for colonies Quest for colonies almost always led to war Imperialism led to rivalry and mistrust amongst European nations – especially Germany
