Mr. Dane Jaber Miami-Dade County Public Schools Department of Science Science ICAD: Middle School Session 3 Mr. Dane Jaber MS Instructional Supervisor Ms. Cindy Jolicoeur Curriculum Support Specialist K-8 Ms. Vanessa Baker Curriculum Support Specialist MS Welcome to the third Middle School Science ICAD powercast
AGENDA Welcome and Ice Breaker Investigating plants Unwrapping Standards Sense making Designing sense making opportunities Virtual Walkthroughs Reflection This powercast is designed to recap the events of the day, explore and design sense making opportunities shared at the professional development. Department of Science
Session Outcomes Participants will be able to: Incorporate M-DCPS instructional resources to support science teaching and learning Identify how M-DCPS integrates Mathematics and Language Arts Florida Standards for effective science teaching and learning Support Inquiry in science In this session we survey inquiry based activities to reinforce literacy, effective science teaching and learning. Department of Science
Investigating Plants (After your investigation) What do you find? What do you still want to know? We explored an 8th grade Essential Lab Investigating Plants as open inquiry so that participants can give meaning to their experiences. Essential Labs can be found on the science.dadeschools.net website. Department of Science
Redesign in Mind… To start, participants observed plant leaf disks and contemplated the factors necessary for plant photosynthesis. Then, participants redesigned an experiment to test variables that would influence the rate of photosynthesis. Department of Science
Making Sense? Teachers shared their results as a scientific explanation using CER to make sense of their findings. Department of Science
Investigating Plants A New Form of Chlorophyll? Text coding: 6, 7 or 8 – Relates to a specific grade level’s content H – Hypothesis O - Observation To wrap up the activity and provide a real world extension to the concepts investigated, participants used text coding strategies such as marking 6th and 7th grade aligned content to add focus to the informational text that accompanied the essential lab. These articles can be found on the science.dadeschools.net website under the instructional resources tab. Department of Science
Unwrapping the Standards After participants shared their experiences, they targeted the ways in which they can facilitate sense making for their students within the classroom by unwrapping the benchmark to address prior knowledge, resources and the content and skills necessary to master that benchmark. Department of Science
Making sense of sense making STEM Teaching Tool – Beyond the Written CER K-12 Science Plan NSTA – What Works in Science Account of Sense-Making in Scientific Argumentation and Reasoning What is the core message of the reading? What is unexpected (attention grabbing or violates some idea)? How can you concretely represent the core message? In order to understand science learning, teachers explored a myriad of articles that offer an approach to teacher learning that focuses on science understanding, classroom practice and literacy support. Department of Science
Into the Looking Glass After observing how the readings applied to the practice of science, teachers shared their interpretation of the “into the looking glass” protocol where they were able to reflect on the critical connections to their own classrooms necessary to teach students effectively. Department of Science
Virtual Walkthrough On a virtual walkthrough, participants analyzed practices or products found in several science classrooms for evidence that sense making in science was taking place. Participants identified images that may display instances that lend itself to sense making as well as images of everyday occurrences that may be typical in a classroom but may not suffice as a display of student acquisition of knowledge. Department of Science
STEM Conference So what’s new? Be sure to save the date. On February 16, 2016, the Dade County Science Teachers Association and Miami Dade County Public Schools will host the annual STEM Conference at Miami Senior High School. More information will be forthcoming through MyLearningPlan. Department of Science
