By: Hannah Sidranski, Ryan Jacobs, and Wade Badgley The Great Dying The Native American (One) By: Hannah Sidranski, Ryan Jacobs, and Wade Badgley Wade

Disease and Native Americans The diseases that brought about the Great Dying are called Old World Diseases and includes chicken pox, malaria, measles and yellow fever. During the Great Dying, up to 90% of the Native American population died. The peoples of the Caribbean Islands disappeared 50 years after Columbus' arrival. Hannah

The Impact on American Culture The Great Dying impacted american culture by the amount of native americans that died. Without the great dying the native american population would be much larger today. The reason that the natives are dying so fast and easily is because they were never exposed to European diseases, therefore never able to fight them as easily. ryan

Europeans and How they Prospered The Europeans prospered from the Great dying because they were able to get land that was once the Native Americans, but, since the Great Dying wiped out entire tribes, the Europeans could take over their land. wade

American Government and How they Saw It The early Europeans were aware that diseases were devastating the American Indian communities. In New England many of the English colonists saw the diseases as evidence of God’s plan for them to settle the area. Regarding the smallpox epidemic of 1633 which killed many Massachusett and Pawtucket, the English governor commented that the disease “cleared our title to this place. ”Many Europeans, both Spanish and English, see the devastating diseases as evidence of God’s wrath directed toward the Indians and evidence of the sinful life of the Indians. Many Protestants, particularly Calvinists, viewed disease as a divine punishment for sin. Since American Indians were heathens-the greatest sin of all-it was natural that God should destroy them with smallpox. Similarly, the Catholic priests in California attributed diseases such as smallpox to tribal sin, especially the cardinal sin of refusing to believe in Christ. However, there were some Spanish priests who felt that the diseases which were devastating Indian populations were an indication of God’s wrath against the Spanish colonists. They see the depopulation of the Indian communities as depriving the Spanish of their labor force. hannah

The population of America before contact with Europe The population before contact with Europe was close to 22 million and after the great dying was less than a million. ryan

The Great Dying and its Consequences In the Western Hemisphere, the demographic collapse among Native Americans was catastrophic in places that had large populations on the eve of European contact. ... The Great Dying caused massive social, economic, and cultural upheaval in numerous American Indian societies. wade

How European Disease Changed the Course of History The Europeans diseases changed the course of history because it caused the population of America and the natives (mostly) were wiped out tribes at a time. hannah
