Suriname-Country Facts Population: 541,638 (2012 census) Surface Area: 163,820 km² 10-districts, 62-resorts Capital (and coastal area) are the- most populated – 40% total population 2-rainy, and 2-dry seasons 5-hospitals

SARI Sentinel Sites 3-General Hospitals: ILI-recently (re)started 2-hospitals in the capital. 1-district hospital. ILI-recently (re)started These are the sentinel sites which do the Sari surveillance , the Acadamic hospital ICU, the slands hospital and the hospital bordering Guyana in the west

SARI Case Definition (Suriname) An acute respiratory infection, with: history of fever or measured fever of ≥38º and cough and onset within the last 10 days and that requires hospitalization It all starts with the case definition in the SARI surveillance and we use the PAHO sari case definiton 4

ILI Case Definition (Suriname) An acute respiratory infection with: measured fever of ≥38º. and cough. and onset within the last 10 days. 5

Case Report Form SARI The following Must be Completed (minimally): Demographic info. Medical history Hospitalization info. Symptoms Laboratory info. Status of the case The sentinel site nurses are trained by the IPC nurses to complete the standard case report for for SARI, this is what ours looks like

Online Data Entry (Suriname) Sentinel Sites Laboratory Data from the case reports forms is entered into an online information system which integrates clinical, epidemiologic, demographic and laboratory data online linked to a case online

Weekly Report Generated Weekly Reporting Template (Excel sheet)-Updated weekly. Automatically generated. Outputs generated. De weekly report is produced at sentinel site level and compiled by the national epidemiologist, in the future the online system will automatically produce these reports for now we use the excel reports out of the online system and copy paste them to an excel fluID tool which PAHO HQ made

Sentinel Site Performance Monitoring Performance Monitoring System Dashboard -monitoring of reporting: Assess the different steps associated with the surveillance process Assess the time taken to complete each task. Visualizes results Quality of data and percentage of errors in data entry

Percentage Of SARI/ILI Cases Sampled We are also trying to use a data data dashboards in which we can check our own performance indicators and assist the sentinel sites in a more specific manner , We see here the first performance indicator the percentage of sari cases sampled

Percentage Of Positive Samples A important second performance indicator is the number of positive samples

When was the SARI/ILI-case Captured captured? A third important quality of surveillance indicator is the time interval between hospitalization and detection of a SARI case , the gold standard is lined out and so we see that we have work to do

When was the SARI/ILI case registered? Now that we have the online system its also important to note when the SARI case was registered online, see the gold standard and the results

When was the SARI/ILI case sampled? An important performance indicator is the time interval between hospitalization and sampling of material

Time lag: sample receipt- completion by lab Also the lab performance can be evaluated with the use of the gold standard

Case Conclusion and Closing Using the data dashboard we also can find out if the nurses are keeping the administration of the SARI cases op to date

Challenges Timeliness of data entry, Sampling. Data quality. Feedback to sentinel sites, and sentinel providers. Use of the data for policy changes: information to risk groups/ HCW Sustainability
